I am a 59 yr old female who has had back problems most of my life and the last of 3 back surgeries and a spinal fusion in 87.
I gave up my job then as I could not deal with the pain anymore and over the yrs have had many steriod shots in my back. I walk bent over most of the time which wears me out.
About 10 yrs ago I was sent to an arthritis specialist[the one my doctors wife went to} and was diagnosed with fibro, osteo arth and Rheum arthritis.

In the last few months I have developed new symptoms that are having the effect of getting me depressed because I feel so exhaused and nothing I can do about it.
I forgot to add that 2 yrs ago I developed a hole in my left eye and it took 2 yrs to go from %25 vision in that eye to 20/20. Now it is happening in the right eye. So far the hole hasen't appeared but all symptoms seem to be heading that way.
I take amitryptline and zanax at night so I can sleep and have darvocet for pain.
Now the new stuff. The fibro pain is worse and lately I am having "sudden exhaustion" in my legs. I walk across the room normal or across my lawn and suddenly I am done in . I have to stop for a min or to and then go on. I am now experiencening numbness in my hands and feet. also sharp pains in the palm of my hands and deep in the bone of both arms between wrist and elbow.
I am beginning to stay home more and if out somewhere I head for home quicker. My concentration when driving is being affected.
I know I have to do something butI don't
know what. My family doctor seems to think it may be the amitryptline going bad on me. My arthritis doctor added methetrexate , prednisone and folic acid. I don't know what is going on but have began to have weeping spells just plain unexpected.

I would welcome your comments please.

How long has it been since you have had a good back evaluation -- MRI's, exam by specialist, etc.?

A lot of that pain may be coming from your back.

The prednisone should be helping all of your pains, stiffness, and general achiness. However, it is so powerful that it has so many side effects. Only take it as long as you just HAVE TO! Over time, it will make your bones and joints degenerate more.

Are you on any type of anti-depressant now?

Do you take any meds that you did not mention above?

So sorry, I feel real bad for you !! What happening that you are saying is called Chronic Fatigue. You don't say, but if you haven't had your hormone check, please have that check.

And as myself, I took COQ-10, 300 (3 a day) !! It well give you energy, takes this away. At least it did for me. As time went by, I started taking less, and now I don't take it no more. But used the pure.

But, remember, if might have work for me, might not for you, but you can still try and see.

Take care, but don't be afraid to try, it might just help you !! I have been there.

in His arms tonight if you will allow Him to!!! I empathize. I am a little younger but have the same exact symptoms you are referring to in your hands and elbows. I am not on those meds, none of them. I also experience the leg thing. I had an EMG on my arms and was dxd with carpal tunnel, originating from my elbows. The pain in the bones is unreal, it is like an ache you might imagine from a bad case of the flu and then it goes down the bone into your palm into a sharp pain there. I have periods where my hands and arms are numb from the fingertims to my elbow joints for hours/days on end. It is not bad enough yet for surgery but doc gave me firm instructions to not ever rest my elbows on tables, car doors, or rest my chin on my hands, etc. He said that would help prevent it from worsening quicker and would help it from flaring so often. He also gave me an analgesic cream, but I have found pure menthol cream to be more beneficial, it is called Biofreeze. The leg thing he dxd as chronic fatigue and put me on straterra, provigil which did not help and now i have finished my first day on adderall which has been promising. I fall a lot because my legs shake and give in. it is embarrassing, especially at work. Hang in there, hope this helps.

    Dear Gail:

My heart goes out to you, I can identify with your overwhelming pain. What you are experiencing is what many of us are experiencing; the back pain, back surgeries, the propensity for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, the fatigue, the mental fog such as; forgeting everything, when driving feeling spaced out, leaving doors open, water running, etc. and yes the depression and so much more.

I completely understand the desperation that you feel seeing yourself so overwhelmed with so many things going on at the same time that your soul cries out in dispair.

What we have is not easy to take. There are days when we all feel we can't stand this anymore and that is to be expected. One thing we can't lose is hope. Everyday we have to get up and say, I have hope that things will get better.

Honey all I can say to comfort you is take your meds, take hot baths, use the heating pad, walk slowly, listen to soothing music, if you hurt and want to stay in bed do so. In other words pamper yourself, you need it and you deserve it. Know that you are not alone! We are here to listen to you and try to help in any way we can.

I will be praying that you can find some relief. God Bless.

    Soft hugs,

I'm hoping you will feel better. I really don't think there is much I can add as the ladies here gave good advice.

I'm so sorry you have OA, RA, and FMS and back problems too.

The numbness you mentioned could be coming from your back. You need to have that re-evaluated.

I just don't know much about arthritis and the OA and RA you are going through.

I take Xanax at night and Detrol (for bladder spasms). I think you just haven't found the "cocktail" of meds that will help you feel better yet.

I'm sorry about your eye problems. My son has advanced retinopathy and has had laser surgery on one eye and will have the other eye done on 9/22. He is only 25 years old. He maintains that the pupil of the eye that the surgery was performed on is bigger than the pupil of the other eye. I told him to talk to the doc about that when he went for surgery next Thursday.

I know about the staying home more. I've been like that for years.

Your concentration driving is normal, I think, for FMSers. I was going to get my mammogram and driving down the road and all of a sudden, didn't know where I was going. Finally figured out where I was supposed to end up and all went well.

I sympathize with you, but I just don't know what to tell you.

Just wanted you to know that I care.

Someone ask about other meds. I take xanax and amitrytpline about and hour before I go to bed, none in the daytime. The only other med is hormones. It is one of the newer ones out called the "femring" I've wondered if it could have anything to do with my symptoms. I don't take any otc drugs either.

I just recently stopped the methetrexate but I don't think my dr will be happy about that, but the warning label on it said it could damage the eyes and I think I had rather be crippled than blind.
You see. in 1987 I spent the entire summer in a hospital bed and while I was there God taugh me how to paint. I paint birds mostly. People tell me I am good but I don't have that much confidense in myself.

I've also wondered about my back being the cause but my arms and legs are both involved.

I dread doctors appts. The dates hang over my head like a dark cloud, yet I know theres no way around them.

As to music. I sing. I have sang southern gospel before an audience for 51 years. My voice is not what it use to be but I still sing.Every morning when I get up there is a different song running around in my head and it helps me through my day.

Thank you all for replying. I am really at a low point right now. I feel lost somehow.

I do not know much but I do know that amitrytpline may affect your vision. You may want to as your Dr. It is a side-effect. Maybe?????

    I wish you well.

Thank you all for listening. Sometimes one feels like they are on the sea alone. I makes me feel better just to know someone out there knows what I'm talking about.

Prednisone is a very dangerus drug. The list of side effects is huge. It does cause anxiety, mood swings etc...
The weakness you are having may be caused by the cardiovascular problems of fibro and CFS. Poor blood circulation seems to cause a lot of the problems. Not enough blood getting to your brain etc...your blood pooling in your legs...
Try drinking 8-10 glasses of water a caffine drinks... try juicing vegies, easy way to improve your diet
Because of all your health problems I would try to find a doctor who is into natural medicine.

I had the opportunity to go to a pain clinc, we did breathing , getting the pain and moving it down my leg and out the bottom of my foot. sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Head set w/calming music..Prayer...I beleive the more frustration, fear makes us hurt worse. I am so sorry that you feel so badly. I know how you feel. It took me months of visits to the family md and Rhuemy to get the right meds. I got scared because of all the aches and pains & I did not know everyone here experienced the same.

    God Bless you!

Gail, but I will keep you in my prayers.

But someone else said to check out the predisone as it can make you weepy and mess up your brain. My Mom was not taken off properly and had withdrawl, she was in ICU, had to be put back on it and taken off the proper way, it's nothing tro mess with.

    Hope you feel better soon
