Anyone have information on a good rheumatologist in the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek/Grand Rapids (MI) area? I need one who is familiar with ME/CFS and related ailments and who preferably won't object to disability paperwork, if necessary. Most of the docs I've looked at have either been ruled out by personal experience, negative general reviews online, or negative reviews here. Of the few left, I can't find anything good or bad about their attitude towards CFS. I don't want to have to go through yet another evil doctor (or two or three) before I get someone good, compassionate, knowledgeable, and sensible who can give me a diagnosis and a treatment plan that actually works instead of throwing psych. meds in my general direction and hoping I go away...
Oh, and for those who used to see Dr. Timothy Swartz, the South 11th Street office is no longer taking patients with chronic fatigue, chronic pain, or fibro.
    Jazakallah Khair and Thank You!

Are you still seeing Dr. Katz and are you still happy with his services. Does he treat you for fibro, CFS or both? I'm looking for a specialist in CFS.

Dr. Brewer is NOT taking new patients and will give NO referrals. I saw Dr. Simon and he is an egotistical sob with a terribly run office. I was seeing one of the other drs there one day and Dr. Simon barged in to see what the dr I was talking to wanted for lunch. This is only one of many bad examples. I am looking for a dr in the Kansas City area who specializes in chronic fatigue syndrome.

I saw Dr. Driscoll the summer of 2012. I spent around $3,000 out of pocket as she is an Integrative Medicine dr and insurance does not cover. I did 20 visits of this brain wave technique that is supposed to decrease your pain. Those 20 visits cost about $2,200 and I was still taking narcotics for pain. I couldn't afford any more. I really liked Dr. Driscoll but you need a lot of money for her services. I am on disability and not even eligible for Medicare until Feb 2014. I'm paying $739 a month with a $5,000 deductible just to have insurance. Dr. Driscoll did a lot of bloodwork and put me on a no dairy, no egg, gluten free diet for 3 months. I saw no difference. She recommended supplements. Her first visit costs $495.

You might try acam.org - website for integrative medicine doctors. There's a search feature near the top of the page under "health resources". It's not all-inclusive by any means. An IM doctor I used to see is no longer on the list, although he's still an IM doctor. But it might be of some help -

Thanks Mary. Unfortunately I've already tried them--the only listed doctor who deals with rheumatology is not an MD, and I don't have authorization for that. I'm working through the VA system and have permission only to see a civilian rheumatologist.

    Still looking...
I can't possibly be the only individual in southwest Michigan who needs a good rheumatologist who's actually an M.D. and can help with CFS (NOT fibro) who hasn't stopped taking patients.

I recently moved to Akron, Ohio and I am searching for a new fibro doc. I have no insurance, but any suggestions or names of doctors near here would be help ful! I'm getting desperate!

I am currently taking lyrica and cymbalta. I also tske some other drugs for bipolar 2 disorder. I have also tried many different supplements in the past. My biggest issue is that my previous dr did not believe in prescribing any pain meds ( not even non-narcotic) I want to find a dr near here who understands that sometimes pain meds are needed . Somedays I wake up and can hardly move. I'm extremely frustrated : (

Thank you for your quick response. As I said I take meds for fibro, bipolar, and an essential tremor. I am in my 30s but was diagnosed at the age of 11 or 12, so I've been taking various meds for more than half my life. My original dr retired and I have yet to find someone as good as he was. I moved from Cleveland to Akron recently so I'm just doing some research so I don't end up with a quack lol. Btw, my thyroid has been checked and is normal. On the other hand I'm hypertensive and have an extremely fast heart rate. I was put on a beta blocker. Anyway, I'm still hoping someone on here can help with a referral! Lol

Hi, I am new to the forums. I have had FMS since 1999 and have yet to find a doctor to help with the pain. It is so frustrating. My PCP sent me to a pain specialist several years after I started hurting and I thought I was finally going to get relief from the awful pain I was in. I would go in and he would touch every painful spot on my body which would make me hurt for days after, yet when I asked him if he knew what was wrong with me he would tell me I was having chronic muscle spasms. I asked him if he knew what was causing them and he would only say that as an educated guess he would imagine it was due to stress. Nothing he gave me helped and the neurotin seemed to make my brain fog even worse.

I went back to my PCP and asked him to please refer me to someone who would actually work towards finding an answer, I wanted more than educated guess. In 2001/2002 I went to a rheumatologist who finally diagnosed me with FMS but also told me it was secondary FMS and that it had something to do with medications I was taking. The FMS was not brought on by meds as many of the meds I was taking were meds the pain specialist had put me on, a blood pressure med, and an antidepressant. I didn't go back as he felt what I was taking should take care of the pain.

I have been from doctor to doctor and though I know what helps the spasms and what helps to ease some of the pain, I can not get a doctor to prescribe them to me. I finally applied for my disability in 2011, and am working on my 3rd appeal. I had gone to rehab in the spring of 2012 for alcoholism, the only thing that seemed to give me any relief, so that doesn't help my case but they are trying to say I had a 25 year history, which is bull. I had only been drinking for about four years and didn't really become an issue until the last five months before rehab.

I live near Tulsa, OK and the one doctor I was going to go to next was killed in air collision at an air show in NM. I had used him when the kids were little and he was a great doctor. An acquaintance had referred me to him but he died before I could get an appointment.

If anyone knows of someone in Oklahoma, preferably near Tulsa, please let me know. I am tired of suffering as well as my family.

    Thanks,
    Okthomasc
