I have been going to a rheumatologist who says he treats fibromyalgia. So far he has given me zanaflex wich upset my stomach terribly, then yesterday he gave me salsalate 750mg. Nothing I read on the net tells me this is something I want to take as it says a person with high-blood pressure (which I have),takes calcium supplements(which I do) or uses antacids should take them. He asked if I had a bone density test so he realizes I would take calcium. I am at a loss as to whether he knows fibro. or not. Has anyone ever been given these drugs for fibro. ? I would appreciate any info. anyone has as we hope to go to Florida and my meds. are not taking care of my pain and this is what he has given me.I am really upset that he is another Dr. who talks the talk but does not walk the walk as they say. Thanks much ! Sorry this is so long!

doctors referal list? Or a pain management doctor. Have you asked outright for ultram or something like that. You need to tell him you need help with the pain. If he doesn't help then I would go to someone who will help. If you have spassums maybe you could ask for Soma or Flexeral. I can't write any more, my hands are killing me but, I hope this helps some, Kim and Gary

Thanks so much for answering. I noticed you said your hands were killing you. I am having the same problem and he said it was not a part of fibro. My fingers pain something terrible and in the morning I can`t bend them. I assumed this was a part of the disease and you have just validated that. There are no doctors listed in our area as fibro doctors. I don`t have time to get an appointment with a pain specialist before we leave. I`m afraid it may be our last winter down south, it sure is`nt fair to finally finish your working years and then end up this way, but there are a lot of young people who have this disease too. I started with it when I was working but held out until I had to quit in my fiftys. My heart goes out to the young people whose lives are totally disrupted by this monster disease.A friend

I just had a Nerve Conduction/EMG study done by a neurologist. The study indicated that I have significant carpal tunnel, right greater than left hand. He said it is a common condition in people that have fibro. I saw a hand surgeon and gave a steriod shot in my right hand and a split made for the left to see which worked best. If the steroid worked best, surgery would alleviate the problem, if not, it may be something else (not carpal).

So, now I have to wait a couple of weeks to see. Maybe you should have this checked out too. I will try to remember to keep you informed.

The Ultram mentioned above is nonnarcotic but acts as like a narcotic, so hopefully your doc will prescribe for you. I was up to 8 a day. The he tried Darvon 65, an now a narcotic Norco. I hope you are able to get something to relieve your pain before you go to FL, so you can enjoy your vaca.

I am having my husband Gary type this for me. Let me know how you make out.

    Good luck & take care.

I had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands some years ago. I was doing repetitive hand movements on my job. It was very sucessful and I know the pain you are in. I used to wake up in the night and hang my arms off the edge of the bed to make the numbness go out of them and OH!! the pain when they came to. This is a different pain, it feels like the ligaments are shrinking or tightening up. Maybe I am fooling myself as they are getting numb this morning as I type. I would never have any type of surgery again unless it was life threatening after the terrible shape I am in since I had my tail bone removed. It caused hot burning pain all over my body and I have ended up on oxycontin, neurontn and klonopin. I believe I just need the dosage upped rather than have another med. added to what I take now. I don`t understand this disease well enough to know any thing for sure. That`s why I turn to this site so much for info. and no one answered as to whether they had ever taken salsalate as a treatment, so I did`nt get any input from my post about that. One person takes zanaflex and has good results but my stomach would`nt tolerate it. That is another problem I have trouble with so many meds. very touchy stomach. I don`t know what to really do. I feel afraid of the salsalate. Too many side affects to feel easy in my mind. It is good to talk to some-one about all these problems. Thanks again for your interest. A friend

anything about it. But, if the side effects and the med is contrindacated for the conditions you have then I would not take it. I would call the doc and teel them why and say so what else do you think I should try. I know they are thinking about putting me back on Neurontin(sp) because they say it works for nerve problems. Gary caouldn't get out of bed w/o Oxycontin 3 x's pd and the oxyirs 8-9 pd and now Actiq 600 mcg 3-6 x's pd. ( this is the newest pain med added to his regeam he will be going up to 800mcg next month. This has helped him but, you just keep on going up the ladder on the dose. The pmd said that with oxy the does can go up to an infinite amount and that after approx 6-10 months the does has to go up due to tolerence. This hand thing is a pain but, the hand doc and the Chrio arn't sure that Carpol is the problem even though the tests show that. Some days it's hard to open up my hands and I know of others who have the same problem you mentioned.

Surgery, yuck! I have has so many over the years and I just don't want anything that has to be done under a general. I had 2 minor ones last year and now they want to do 2 more and the hands would be 3. I just say I will see.

Do you have a doc in Fla? Maybe the docs refural list has one you could see there and get their opion and some help.

Take care my friend, Kim and Gary
