Please tell me the different ways that help you fall asleep. Whatever helps you: Prescription or Non-prescription.
I wake up and feel like I never went to bed.
    Thanks, Vicky

It all depends on so many factors.

I got the Benadryl idea from someone here on the board not very long ago - sometime in December, I think.

Good luck - I know these sleep problems along with everything else are not so much fun.

My doctor doesn't believe I've got a problem so doesn't help me much with anything.

I have tried the Benadryl and it seemed to work for a while. Lately I have been taking a small dose of Elavil at night but doesn't seem to help plus I wake up in the middle of the night hungry and can't sleep. I have also tried Neurotin but it gives me anxiety, which is weird because I thought it was suppose to help anxiety.

    Thanks for your reply!!

I was never able to get quality sleep until I started taking Klonopin. It also helps my sensory overload, tinnitus, and anxiety/panic attacks. It appears that it might also have some pain-killing properties.

I take the vitamin supplement ZMA. Sleep sounder, and for longer periods. My husband also takes it - he also sleeps sounder. Plus it has calmed down his restless legs. Good stuff.

Friends, before you start taking prescription drugs or over-the-counter sleep aids (with side effects of unknown duration and intensity---and/or diminishing in effect over time) please use common sense such as: no caffeine; alcohol; chocolate; sugar; sweets late in the day. And no TV just before bed! I take one 300mg capsule of St. John's Wort just before bed. I don't wake up in the middle of the night with an overwhelming sense of anxiety or dread as I used to. Also, massaging with a "thumper" (mine was $40) or getting a massage from a friend or spouse.

    Hi Vicky,
I have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep as most of us do with these DD. I use 2 benedryl and 2 tylenol PM to get to sleep. Works if I am lucky but sometimes I wake up in the morning feeling like a truck hit me. I did take amitryptilene for a little while but I gained 20 pounds on it and felt much worse with the extra weight on, I finally lost it and it was a struggle. Hope this is what you are looking for.
    Have a great day,
    Sandy

I do not get "quality" sleep without 1mg Ativan. I cannot use it every night, otherwise it is not effective. I take it for two nights in a row, take a break with 1.5mg Lectopam on the off nights. Without the Ativan, I awaken several times in the night and usually have very bizarre/vivid dreams throughout. 5 out of 7 is not bad!

I try not to eat past 4pm and watch what I eat during the day. I usually go to bed around 8-9 pm. Sometimes if I need someting I use Arthritis Tylenol right before bed. I also use soft music. Gail

It takes a load of stuff to get me to sleep before 3 am.

    Every night:
    .25 mgs. Xanax
    50 mgs. Benadryl
    2 Tylenol EX
    .2 mg. Catapres
    400 mgs. magnesium citrate
    750 mgs. GABA

Nights I still can't sleep after that:
    25 mgs. Phenergan

Nights I still can't sleep and have to drive somewhere the next day:
    15 mgs. Restoril

I take Flexeril 1 Hour before I am going to bed. If I do not take it I have no problem falling asleep but cannot sleep through the nite like others on the board have said. Have been to sleep studies twice and have leg movement during sleep.

Anyway Dr. prescribed 10 mg each evening and I usually take only half of a pill and then I can get up in the morning without that "Hang Over" feeling. Getting a Good nights sleep does wonders for the pain.

Just make sure this is compatible with any other medications you are taking. Experimented with different combinations over the years (with Drs. Help) and now take Flexeril, low dose of Prozac in the morning and Wellbutrin twice a day. Also tried the natural route but the depression was to much and I needed antidepressants.

Even though we are tired, staying asleep is SO important so our bodies can rebuild!

I haven't slept well for years, well before CFS kicked in. Had a sleep study done and was told I have a "severe sleep disorder, do not go past stage 2". So, I tried ambien, put me to sleep 2-3 hrs after I took it, but only lasted a couple of hrs. Recently changed to restoril. Doesn't put me to sleep at all. I have high blood pressure, so that takes care of all the otc meds like benedryl or tylenol pm. I'd welcome some ideas. Oh, I tried ZMA, too. My neurologist, who also is a specialist is sleep disorders said to just sleep when I can. Unfortunately, that's in the afternoon, when I'm at work, then I only doze.

I have been suffering from insomnia for 9 years now, and for 5 of those it has been because of my FMS. Prescription meds like muscle relaxers work pretty well, but only if you NEED THEM!!!! Flexeril was one that worked pretty well for me, but I had to be taken off that because there was a chance that it would have a negative reaction with my Prozac. These days I'm on 100MG of Elavil (otherwise known as "Amitriptylene") which is an anti-depressant but is used for FMS for relief of depression and as a sleep remedy. Talk to your doctor, he/she should be able to help you to get the "restorative sleep" we all miss out on. I remember those nights tossing and turning, or when it felt like I was getting rest and waking up feeling like I hadn't slept in days. Just keep working with your doctor, you'll find the right combination of meds or remedies that will work for you.

For me it is klonopin but I feel sleep deprived and fall asleep every time I sit down but that can be caused by other meds. The klonopin puts me to sleep.

    What helps me sleep:
~Nothing containing caffeine after 4 pm (coffee, tea, chocolate)
~Only light food in the evening (main meal at lunch when possible)
~Sometimes herbal tea (I love Sleepytime!)
    ~I watch my alcohol intake
~I try to get some exercise during the day, especially when I don't feel like it
~I take Neurontin, which has greatly improved my sleep.
~Calcium has helped my husband's sleep.
~And -- I have found that late-night computer sessions overload my eyes, so if I think I'll have trouble sleeping, I don't use the computer past 9 pm.
Hope this helps! Long and peaceful sleep to you, Vicky....

I have no problem getting to sleep but was constantly waking throughout the night.

So now I eat only a healthy diet and supplements daily, and no sugars in the evening or day at the moment.
I was on HRT and have stopped all drugs of any kind.
I am at present on Olive Leaf Extract (it`s worked for my daughter) and have this week started taking Magnesium at bed time, which has given me quality sleep, and if I do wake in the night i`m straight back off again, it`s amazing.

    Hope this helps you.
