Hi.. I have tried a number of SSRI'S for pain and depression from FM. I've tried Zoloft, Wellbutrine, Paxil and one "Tricyclet".. Elavil. Elavil was horrible... cannot take the Tricyclets!!

Out of them all Paxil worked the best ... that is until life just became "FLAT"... No highs and no lows. And it really began to affect my memory!

I've been off all antidepressents for over a year now and I'm considering going back on one just to help with the pain... ok and a little depression and anxiety too.

So I was considering trying Prozac since I've never tried that one before... and both my daughters are on it for general depression and doing VERY WELL on it.

Anyone get good results from using PROZAC?? Does it help with anxiety too?? Let me know.

    Thanks .... CarolK

with prozac. I took it for over 20 years. just in august 05 my "pain specialist" took me off it and told me that Cymbalta would work better. By Christmas I was a mess... I begged my doc to give me back my prozac but he wouldn't I have stuck out the cymbalta and with counciling and a couple other meds I have finially turned around and do feel pretty good again on the cymbalta. But if he told me to go back on the prozac for some other reason I wouldn't hesitate at all. I really had no side effects and good luck within 6 weeks I was great. in that 20 years I would get tough and think I didn't need it and stop for a while.... my family would end up saying, " mom, you aren't taking your medicine are you?" they could tell the difference that's how much it helped me.
that's my 2 cents. I hope this helps

Thank You so much for you imput! I appreciate it!

Just curious... why won't your doctor allow you to go back on Prozac??

Is there a problem with long term use? I was hoping for pain relief as well as depression/anxiety help.

    Thanks again.... CarolK

HI, I WAS ON PROZAC FOR AWHILE, BUT I HAD TO STOP TAKING IT, BECAUSE OF THE HEATBURN IT GAVE ME. PEOPLE HAD TOLD ME, YOU HAVE TO WEAN YOURSELF OFF OF IT, BUT I JUST STOPPED COLD TURKEY. THE XANAX XR 1MG IT'S TIME RELEASE, AND 10MG OF LEXAPRO HELP ME FOR DEPRESSION, AND ANXIETY, BUT THAT'S ONLY A FEW OF THE MEDICATIONS I TAKE. MEDICATIONS WORK DIFFERENT ON EACH PERSON, IT'S HARD TO COMPARE YOUR ACHES WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S.
    TAKE CARE,

Hi Kitty... thanks for telling about your experience with Prozac.

I had heard somewhere that Prozac can cause stomach upset. I am taking Prilosec OTC for esophageal spasms right now... so I am concerned that Prozac might aggrevate the problem.

    Thanks for you imput.

I've been on Prozac since 1996. I'm on 20 mg. every morning. I also take Xanax, so I don't know if the Prozac helps with anxiety. I think for me it made me nervous some. But I felt less pain within 6 hours of taking it, it worked that well for me.

Was the second AD I tried too. The first was Zoloft and that made me hurt worse. I also had constant headaches and I don't anymore.

I would certainly give it a try. You have everything to gain and nothiing to lose.

THAT'S A GOOD POSITIVE WORD! Since being off Paxil I have been in so much more pain!

I really didn't want to go on anymore antidepressants cause I had such a horrible experience weaning off of Paxil... terrible "brain zaps"... and that was when I was tapering off by just one millagram per week!

Like I said in my post... I see such a positive experience with my two daughters since they have been on Prozac. I am hoping that it will help with the pain level!

Thanks again Faye... I appreciate your imput!!

    Blessings....CarolK

    Hi Carol.
I have been on Prozac(Fluoxetine) for nearly 4 year's too for Fibro etc.
It's help's boost the serotonin level that all us Fm/cfs sufferer's lack and does reduce the pain for me expecially during the day.
I too take 20mg after breakfast and feel so much better within a couple of hour's.

At first i will admit it gave me dreadful heartburn but that's only a side-effect for the first 3 or 4 week's.
After that i had no side-effect's at all and it is my lifesaver.
You don't have to think you should be depressed to take Prozac, as it is used pain as well.

    I would'nt be without it.
Lastly i too came off it once and bang, i was back to where i started so i shall continue to take it.

    Hope this help's.

I started taking prozac many years ago.I remeber the first time I heard about it.They did a story about it on 60 Minutes.I knew then I had to get some of that stuff. And it has been one of the best things I did for myself. But of course, everyone has different side effects.Never know how yo are gonna feel til yo try it.But just be sure you are back in the dr.'s office within 3 weeks to be checked.

I hope this works well for you.

I have been on prozac for about a month now. I was having so much anxiety I asked my doctor to put me on it. I had taken it 15 years ago when I was first diagnosed with EBV. I took prozac for about nine months and stopped taking it back then because I didn't think I needed it any more. I thought I was fine although my children wanted me to go back on it because I am such a worrier they said it would just take the edge off. So after battling, this year with some of my old symptoms of CF I thought I would go back on it. It has only been a month but my anxiety is under control and the heart palpitations has slowed way down. I take 10 mg in the morning.

    Hope this helps

    Hello,
Prozac was wonderful for my depression and anxiety. It also helped with my insomnia, which would help ease other symptoms. I'd say try it.

I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU WHO TOOK THE TIME TO GIVE ME SOME POSITIVE IMPUT!!

After trying a number of the SSRI's I was really a bit scared to try yet another antidepressent!

But thanks to you all I think I will ask my doc at my upcoming appointment to give me a script to try it out.

I am hoping that I do not experience the excess acid that some of you complained of. But since I am already taking Prilosec OTC that might help with that problem.

Thanks to you all and SOFT HUGS TO EACH OF YOU!!

    CAROLK

PS... THANKS CINDY FOR THE SUGGESTION OF EFFEXOR... I'VE NEVER TRIED THAT ONE... IF IT IS A TRICYCLIC, I DON'T THINK I WANT TO TRY IT OUT... NASTY HEADACHES WITH THAT TYPE OF DRUG!!

I did have heartburn and stomach pain for about 1 & 1/2 weeks when I first started it, but I keep on it and used OTC meds for that and then it all went away and I don't have any problems with Prozac anymore.

If you start off and feel better but have heartburn, give it a few weeks and it should just go away as your body gets used to it.

It was worth it to me.

Hi Carol, like Faye i too had acid and heartburn mainly in the afternoon for 3 or 4 week's when i started taking it.
Then one day the symtpon's just disappeared as my Gp said they would.
Apparently it's the commonest side-effect when starting it.

Go for it, what have you got to loose.
It's given me my sanity back and help me cope emormously.

    Take care.

is that it is available in generic and is cheaper. So that is another reason I'm quite happy with it. I only pay a copay of $10 a month fo it.

Prozac was the best thing that ever happened to me for FMS. (Besides Xanax... :)

    Hugs,
    Faye
I can take Prozac on an empty stomach now and it doesn't even bother me.

WELL YOU ALL SEEM TO HAVE FAVORABLE RESULTS FROM THE PROZAC. I AGREE WITH YOU THAT IT IS WORTH A TRY.

I WAS JUST HESITANT TO TRY ANOTHER SSRI SINCE GOING OFF OF THE PAXIL OVER A YEAR AGO.

BUT I HAVE TO THINK THAT THERE IS "SOMETHING" OUT THERE THAT CAN MAKE LIFE A LITTLE BETTER.. AND SINCE YOU AS WELL AS SOME OTHERS HERE HAVE GIVEN ME SUCH POSITIVE IMPUT, WELL I GUESS I WILL GO AHEAD AND GIVE IT A TRY.

I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED IN THE WEEKS AHEAD AS TO HOW IT WORKS. FIRST OF ALL I HAVE TO GO IN AND SEE MY DOCTOR AND SEE IS SHE WILL GIVE ME A SCRIPT FOR IT.

ONCE AGAIN... THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR SHARING WITH ME.

    BLESSINGS... CAROLK

    Hi,
I couldn't take Prozac and had tried about 10 other SSRIs with varying unpleasant results (Effexor allowed me to freely express my inner rage!) Finally went to a psychiatrist instead of my internist. He prescribed Provigil, a narcolepsy med, and it works for me. I read patients' feedback on the Net before I tried the sample (1/4 tab in a.m.) and just about everyone wrote "I feel like someone gave me back my life," and now I join in the chorus. I am on 100 mg, the crippling depression is gone, and I have hope, finally, that I will have a life (not the one I had) living with this disease. For instance, in the past week I read a book for the first time in 2 years, I have the energy to get on the Net and read about my condition, etc. This info is not to tout Provigil but to encourage you to know there are alternatives out there and one of these will work for you. I had been so discouraged about finding something that helped with depression and fatigue. So----God bless and good luck!

    Best regards,

    Diane T.

    Honora,
There are no rules on the board that say you can't mention Prozac or Paxil. Meds have been mentioned in posts here for years and years.

If you feel it is against the rules, you should contact Tech Support.

I suffer from pretty bad depression but most of it is due to terrible life circumstances that I am going through right now. I take Klonopin, Hydrocodone, Soma and Ativan. My psychiatrist recently gave me Cymbala to try because I asked him about something for depression but he said be careful, I am on some strong stuff already and he's a bit hesitant about adding more.

Haven't taken it yet. Actually if something positive would happen in my life, just even a little, I know my depression would get less.

By nightime I am pretty well drowsy which is OK because I wouldn't sleep without these meds due to my intense pain. So I'm still hesitating about the Cymbala. I remember my experience with Topamax, wish turned me schizophrenic.

I'd prefer Prozac; maybe I should have asked him for that. I took it several years ago and other then the stomach burning which I took Maalox for there were no other symptoms.

Also St. Johns Wort worked just as well for me as Prozac. I even got the stomach burn with that too but Maalox again took care of it. Maybe I should go back on St. John's.

For the person starting the thread about Prozac, have you considered St. John's Wort? It's been used for centuries and I can vouch for the fact that it was as good as Prozac for my depression.

I am so sorry to hear that your life circumstances are so difficult at this time... but please don't loose heart! Nothing is impossible with God!!

As to the St.Johns Wort, well I have tried it and found it to not work at all. It has been quite a while since I have tried it... but it just didn't do a thing for me.

You are so fortunate to find a doctor that will Rx all the meds that you need... I've had nothing but trouble getting and pain relief from my doctor! But she will Rx antidepressents.

But thanks for your suggestions... I really appreciate them.

    Blessings to you...CarolK
