Ok, lets see if it is humanly possible to add to my already HUGE laundry list of aches, illness and disease????? Yep, now I've been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis manifesting as Lumbar Facet Joint Disease (in other words, one hell of lower back ache!!!!!!!) Blood work and an MRI showed RA and degenerative disc disease in lower back... Of course, I cannot take NSAIDS b/c of my bleeding guts so I would just like to ask WHAT THE HECK DO I DO NOW?????????????????? I know this is a rant, but as most of you know all to well, I AM SO SICK OF BEING SICK!!!! I've got an appt. with and Osteo tomorrow which I assume he will just Rx physical tx (which is useless in my humble opinion) and the Rheumy Aug. 7th. I've tried pain meds, heat, ice, hot tub, exercise, massage and just about anything else that I can think of to relieve this lower back pain to no avail!!! I could really use any advice on how to treat lower back pain (besides heat, ice and NSAIDS) and a few words of encouragement! God Bless you all with many pain free days ahead!

    :) Donna

I don't know anything about lumbar facet joint disease, but, I too, have had problems with my lower back for several years.

This past winter, my new chiropractor ordered x-rays. I woke-up one morning and as I tried to get out of bed, I was in tears from the pain and could barely walk. The x-rays indicated spinal stinosis and compressed discs.

My doc has a "de-compression table" and started me on the treatments. My insurance would not pay for the treatments so I had to finance them through a medical care company.

The decompression table stretches the back/vertabre to allow blood and oxygen flow to the discs, which in turn, allows the discs to expand to normal size. Once the discs expand to normal size, they no longer press on nerves which cause the pain. Also, drinking water is essential to hydrate the discs.

This treatment was my last resort -but- thank God, it did work. My family doc made a referral for me to see a neurosurgeon- I definately did not want to have surgery so I decided to try the decompression treatments.

You can research the treatments online by typing in "lumbar decompression table" or "lower back decompression treatment".

I hope you find this info helpful.

I have the same problem. I have tried pain meds., physio, heat, ice etc. with no relief. The only thing that helps a bit is to tape 2 heating pads together long ways and wrap them around my lower back and rt. hip. Then I take a sofa cushion and tuck under my lt.hip and lower back and it takes some of the pressure off. Other than that I was told there isn't anything that can be done. I certainly feel sorry for you. All the best.

Hey I have SI hip joint dysfunction and degenerative disc disease. For that I have had 6 Major joint injections. Then I had 2(one on each side) facet injections then I had 2(one on each side) radio freqency injections where they "burn" the offending nerves using radio waves. It has helped and should last at least 6 months or more. It was done by my pain mgmt dr. Look into Major joint injections/facet injections/medial branch blocks/nerve blocks/RF. Hope one of these helps. You could also try a lidoderm patch. It's a lidocaine patch that you put on for 12 hrs and take off for 12 hrs. Doesn't help completly but it does take some of the upper level pains away. NSAIDS don't really help anyway. You could also try ultram or the ultram+tylenol(ultricet I think it's called). Hope that helped somehow. I also hope that it's not too rambley.

Thanks for the info on the decompression table and injections! As it turns out, the orthopedist cancelled my appointment saying that he doesn't treat back pain!! I now have an appt. scheduled with a pain specialist on Tuesday! Hopefully, I will get the facet joint injection b/c I definitely need immediate pain relief!! I feel like Im a "hot potato" being passed around that nobody want to touch!!!!!
