I read something about reverse therapy here, I'd like
more information on it, but can't find much on the web.
Is it just done in the U.K? Are there Doctors here in the
    U.S that do this?
Has anyone here had any success with it?
If you have any info on it, please share.

    Thanks

Periodically this topic is brought up on this board, but no one has any specific information on it.

Usually, after a few responses with little information, it's dropped.

Maybe someone will give some specifics this time.

Reverse therapy for ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia

    Assumptions of Reverse Therapy
The central assumption in Reverse Therapy is that the symptoms of ME, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FMA) are produced by what we call ‘Hypothalamitis’ – which translates simply as ‘an inflammatory condition of the Hypothalamus’.

The Hypothalamus is situated in the mid-brain where it receives information from the so-called higher thinking centres, from the limbic system (the ‘emotional brain’) and from practically every organ in the body. It relays hormonal information to the body through the Pituitary Gland (Endocrinal system), controls the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and influences the Immune System. Its main role is to harmonise mind-body functions to maintain the best possible state of emotional and physical well-being.

The Hypothalamus translates messages from the thinking centres and from the emotional brain into neurochemical signals that are passed to the Endocrine and the Autonomic Nervous System. These signals influence most functions including energy levels, sleep patterns, mental alertness, the muscles and skeleton, metabolism, blood flow, the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system.

Because the Hypothalamus is central to regulating a balanced exchange between the internal and external environment, it is extremely sensitive to anything that puts the individual at risk of harm. If the body-mind believes it is under persistent threat then the Hypothalamus can go into overdrive, continually priming the Endocrine and Autonomic Nervous Systems to take action in order to compensate. If environmental demands are prolonged, or not attended to, this eventually produces the condition we have dubbed ‘Hypothalamitis’. Sufferers can experience muscle pain/weakness, fatigue, headaches, swollen glands, poor concentration and memory because the Hypothalamus triggers the release of chemicals that tense the muscles, shut down attention, exhaust the energy supply, increase lymphatic fluid and alter blood flow to different areas of the brain. A dysfunctional Hypothalamus ceases to respond appropriately to feedback from the body regarding its exhausted state. Instead it continues to flood the body with chemical messages that stoke up these symptoms until ‘Hypothalamitis’ is produced.

The diagram shown below depicts the crucial role of the Hypothalamus in producing mind-body symptoms.

Messages from the thinking centres in the brain, especially the emotional brain (the limbic system) filter through to the Hypothalamus. Using the Pituitary gland it then relays neurochemical messengers to the Endocrine System, the Autonomic Nervous System and to the Immune System in order to maintain maximum body-mind efficiency in relation to the environment.

    An Overview of Reverse Therapy

Reverse Therapy is a specialised treatment that requires no medication, dietary change or use of supplements. The treatment consists of face-to face one-hour consultations normally 2-3 weeks apart. Study reveals that 75% of cases will be complete at 6 sessions while the remainder can take longer.

Reverse Therapy is based on the insight that the symptoms of CFS/ME/FMA are produced by ‘Hypothalamitis’. The symptoms are unconscious messages from the body-mind (using the Hypothalamus) that attempt to alert the individual to imbalances it has detected between the organism and the environment. Reverse Therapy proceeds by interpreting the body-mind messages about the environment that creates symptoms. Once these have been understood the client is encouraged to take action on them and allow them to complete their work. It is important to note that CFS/ME and Fibromyalgia are physical illnesses based on body-mind learning and although mood tends to be lowered eventually, they are not examples of depression. We draw no distinctions between the mind and body, for both are two aspects of the same organism. Body-mind intelligence seeks to protect and guide the individual towards authentic, healthy, balanced interactions with situations that were, in the past, experienced as excessively demanding. ‘Hypothalamitis’ develops because those demands have yet to be safely dealt with and the hypothalamus is then deregulated in the way described in the previous section.

    How Reverse therapy works

In this approach we reverse the (understandable) urge to get rid of the symptoms of CFS/ME/FMA straight away. Instead we focus on why the physical symptoms are still being produced, without resisting them. When we have listened to the message of the symptom, and the environmental problem it is based on, we can facilitate its release. The mind-body reverses the symptoms naturally because it is responsive to new learning and because emotions, thoughts and physical reactions are all aspects of the same mind-body learning state. For example, an individual with Irritable Bowel Syndrome might have had the perception, ‘this is upsetting me, making me angry and I can‘t cope’, when faced with emotional conflict in any given situation. This manifests itself initially through the Hypothalamus acting on the Endocrine and Autonomic Nervous systems to over-activate the smooth muscles and glands in the bowel. For example, the underlying message could be: ‘My symptoms of IBS are with me as I have not so far learnt to digest anger’. Once this message has been understood and acted upon the bowel symptoms (which are only the physiological expression of the mind-body learning state associated with conflict) can be reversed. The hypothalamus is able to release them because it is now acting on new messages from the thinking centres/emotional brain that tell it that the threat has been recognised and dealt with.

Our first step is to brief clients so that they understand how ‘Hypothalamitis’ is created and how the symptoms of CFS/ME and FMA are produced by the condition.

We then work with the client on translating the message contained within the symptoms and applying its principles to the individual case. The basis of this therapy is that once the body-mind is happy that the message has been received and acted upon then it can stop sending symptoms and the individual is returned to full asymptomatic health. This is entirely logical from Reverse Therapy’s perspective since no protective body-mind would want to create ill health and therefore has a natural propensity towards returning to a healthy state. Clients are fully briefed on the mechanism through which the body-mind uses the hypothalamus to create symptom messages so that individuals can apply this learning for themselves.

Clients are asked to keep a journal that records when, where and how often any symptoms occur, along with the thoughts and emotions that came up at the time. This enables them to monitor a reduction in symptoms, checks whether any messages have been missed and identifies whether there are any unresolved environmental issues that might be blocking recovery.

for the information, that's very interesting stuff.
I wonder how you find a Doctor that does that.
That treatment sounds like it helps..

Well, Thanks Again for finding that info for me.
