So, I called my new Rheumy today, ( only saw her once before,) because I am in a flare up. I take Naproxen for pain so, as you can imagine...right now ...it ain't cutting it. She prescipted me some steriods. Same type I often take for asthma. Anyone else take roids for fibro? Why am I the only patient in the world that can not be prescibed something for my pain?

I am sorry. I am in the same seat, and the same med; Naproxen.

Join the club, I guess,,,, isn't it sad?

I am having the same problem, don't feel bad. I posted a topic "Nervous about asking the dr. for pain meds" The responses were quite interesting. You ought to look at it. It might make you feel not so alone.

    go on mayoclinic.com.....

side affects are horrible..i have written a few times about my experiences on the blessed med..

so great now can really gain some weight..ruin ;you veins, and emotionally mess up your moods that may already swing to begin with....

my take is if they don't know what to do put them on prednisone...

no steriods no way...they are good steriods either, catabolic...ruins muscle and causes more fat to come on quickly...
    find another dr....

unless it is a short cycle like a medrol dose pack which is six days, they are used that way to attempt to break a pain cycle, don't do it. long term steoid use isn't a good option. they have way to many side effects. i have had good luck with the shrt cycles for haedaches when they have lasted for weeks. but again it's only six days of the steroid. i don't see any benefit to long term use and have never heard of them being used that way. stick with what your pain specialist says. i hope this helps.

to find a doctor that understands pain and will prescribe something for it. I also take Naproxen but as an anti-inflammatory not a pain releiver. I also take Vicodin for pain relief.

Try the doctor referral link at the top of this page or http://www.sover.net/~devstar/provider.htm to find an FM friendly doctor to help you.

It is a 6 day cycle - not long term steroids. When I have taken it in the past for other ailments I did notice that it helped my fatigue...still waiting on that pain relief though. I really do not want to switch doctors again because it is such a long process. I hate fibro!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anytime I have had to take steroids (last time was for burst eardrum) I get really aggressive, mean, and anxious. My husband stays AWAY from me! My mother has the same reactions.(She takes them if an allergy shot causes anyphylactic shock. New and competent allergist=no more anaphylactic shock!) When I taper off the dose, I always get a mammoth migraine, LOTS of pain and it will last for 3 or 4 days. I will now only take steroids if I absolutely must, no other treatment available or effective. (Not often, such as for the burst eardrum!) I always ask the doctor if I can go without, and describe the side effects. Unfortunately, most doctors take migraine pain more seriously than fibro pain. But at least they take it seriously!

I've been having steroid injections in my spine. They are helping with the bulging disk pain, but I wouldn't want to take them for anything else!

They give my husband one where you start high dose and taper off when his back/hip is really bad and that is the only thing that seems to help him.

I'm so sad, since I've had these injections I will never be able to play major league baseball :-(! LOL

Steroids are for auto-immune diseases like lupus, FM is not.

They cause more harm than good in my opinion.

They break down muscle tissue! We don't need that!

    They also thin the bones.

get a 2nd op., roids should be last resort.

There are many other pain meds to try first.

    Take care, Claudia

So, I am taking 6 days, ( on day 2,) of 4 mg meth. steroids. Guess what, it ain't helping! I am to the point now where I do not want to tell the Doctor or family....I am sick of complaining. I find myself trying to act as if I am normal....that ain't working either.

Yes, the reason you take them for asthma when really in a bad way is to reduce the inflamation in the lungs. FM does not involve inflamation supposedly.

It also can make FM worse. In fact how much do you take for the asthma, and why? there are lots of safer asthma mads these days, unless it is nasal spray with low steroid in.

I think steroids cqan cause flare ups. Not good for everyday use.

I rarely take them for asthma ....this is my 3rd time on a roid cycle this year. I am surprised to hear all this negetive stuff about them....not that they are helping, just I really wonder why she would give me them.
