My serotonin levels were not tested, but when I started taking 5-htp (an amino acid which helps raise serotonin levels), I started sleeping better.

I can't tolerate the side effects of prescription antidepressants. I had no side effects from the 5-htp, except for a moderate headache for about a week, but it was helping with sleep so much I stuck it out, and the headache stopped.

You should not take 5-htp and an SSRI at the same time because you might develop serotonin syndrome (too much serotonin), which can be dangerous.
