Very often, those of us with these chronic, debilitating, mystifying
and maddening conditions such as fibromyalgia fms/ME, etc.
feel useless in this world, compared to the active "normal"
lives most of us once led.

Here are a few things I jotted down in my reading that may offer
a glimpse of a different way of valuing ourselves just because we exist, period,
and also that we don't always know what effect we may have on the world,
perhaps in a small, quiet way. . .

    Happy New Year, from artyreader

From a poem (I think the name of poem is "Messenger") by Mary Oliver.

". . .my work/which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished."

    From her poem "Thirst"

"My work is loving the world"

( I highly recommend Mary Oliver's poetry, I feel it is accessible even to those
who normally would not be drawn to "Poetry" with a capital "P"!)

"Do not judge each day by the harvest that you reap
but by the seeds that you plant."
    --Robert Louis Stevenson

From the novel "The Hummingbird's Daughter" by Luis Alberto Urrea

The main character is Teresita, a woman who heals the poor and sick,
and is called a "saint" by many. She says:

"I am here to serve. But I am also here to live. I offer my work
to God and I stop when I am finished for the day"

"I CAN ONLY DO WHAT I CAN DO [caps mine}. To try to do more
would be a lie. A lie is worse than doing nothing.'

Wow, that is SO true in so many ways:

"I CAN ONLY DO WHAT I CAN DO [caps mine}.
To try to do more would be a lie.
A lie is worse than doing nothing."
