I am so confused and depressed right now. For about 5 months I've been having lower rib and abnominal pain on and off(more on) and I can't seem to get any help from my doctor. I have had a number of tests done and nothing is showing. I had my gallbladder, liver, pancreas, upper gi, abnominal x-rays and tons of blood work done and everything was normal. It's a constant pain, not stabbing, but grinding, burning etc. It goes away for a few weeks and then returns for about a month. If anyone can relate to this and give me some advice I would really appreciate it. I also have bowel movements every 2 days, but this is normal I've been told. Right now it's in the middle of my abnomen and my lower back. I'm scared to eat, move, laugh etc. Eating does not make it worse or better. I have no nausea, vomitting or blood. I'm really scared and confused. I have also read that abnominal pain comes hand in hand with fm. Is this true? Thanks for listening and god bless.

I don't know if this will apply to you or not, but I just thought I'd let you in on my experience. In one of my many attempts to find relief, I saw a homeopathic doctor who believes in "nature's way." She could not believe that nobody had ever done a culture for yeast, as intestinal yeast can apparently get completely out of control in fibro peeps. She did not perform a test herself, so I don't know how they do it, but the first thing she did was recommend a good fiber "cleanse" for one to two weeks, then probiotics daily afterward. I don't suppose it matters what type of fiber product you use to cleanse, but I get all my nutritional supplements are advocare products (can I same name brands here??) and while the "cleansing" process was a bit uncomfortable, once it was done and I started the probiotics the irritable bowel sydrome that has been plaguing me for years as well as the abdominal/rib pain disappeared. It is worth a try, I suppose, but I certainly would not let my doctor to continue to blow me off, if I were you. Pain means something, after all! Hope you find the cause, and also some relief!
    Peace,

    Hi Tes,
I also had problems like yours, I went through all the tests for gallbladder and they came back negative but my doctor was sure that it was my gallbladder so he ordered a test that they inject you with this dye and then they watch it go through your gallbladder and as it turned out my gallbladder was filled with"sand" that was causing the problem. Don't give up, keep bugging your doctor till he listens to you. Good luck.

I did have a gallbladder ultrasound done and it came back negative. I also thought that gallstone pain is more right sided than left. My pain is more intense on the left side. My mom took out her gallbladder when she was young and she said it was a stabbing kind of pain that would not last for a month or so. Can anyone tell me if this is true. Thanks and God Bless.

Also, gallbladder does cause vomitting and nausea...no? I don't have nausea or vomitting.

I too am having problems with pain in center of my chest around my ribs. I thought it was my gallbladder, but because I was getting so much gas I thought maybe it might be yeast. Looking through Dr. W. Crook's book "The Yeast Connection" he said that garlic had antifungal properties. Some people claimed that it was more effective than nystatin. I got some garlic and it seems to be helping. I've also been taking lemon juice as a gallbladder and liver cleanse. These home remedies might be fine, but I'm well aware to be careful because a diseased gallbladder can be very serious.
The pancreas is on the left side. I think you'd have some indication like a fever or something if it was pancreatitis. Problems with the gallbladder can also effect the pancreas.
Some people on this site have mid chest pain caused by costrocondritis. You can do a search through the older posts for more info on that.

Thank you very much for your input. My pain is felt in the ribs below the breasts(right and left) and around my belly button area and across. It's like a gnawing, twisting pain and is not stabbing. I can't figure it out. I know alot of fm suffers have enormous amount of ribcage pain and abnomen pain. I don't have fevers with this either. All my urine tests have been normal as well. Right now it's mainly in my ribs and my mid back. Any info that I could present to my doctor would be appreciated. Look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you.

And yes I have had rib x-rays and abnomen x-rays done as well. The only thing they saw was alot of gas in my system.

I just got on here tonight to see if anyone had answered one of my questions regarding the same thing!! I've got the same knawing pain in my lower ribs, left side,no fever,Its into my back too-mid to lower and hip on the left???Food does'nt bother me....I do have endometriosis along with a few back problems&the FM.I have had some nausea on&off.(come to think of it...) I feel for you~Its painful whatever the hell it is!! I thought of my kidney too???I will probably try to get in the Drs this week.(much luck needed there!he's usually so booked it takes a couple weeks!)Therefore I get to go for option 2-the ER?Count on a 3-4 hr visit there! I called once I believe yesterday,to see if the ER was busy....I was told steady, very steady.(and i'm not,so I did'nt go.)
I hope we get thru this one!! lol Please keep us posted.

Hi Tes, This is my first post on here. I hope I don't goof up and get banned. I was wondering if you go to a regular MD or if you are seeing a Gastroenterologist? Seeing one of these could make a world of difference. When I had gallstones the pain was "all in my head" for 10 miserable years until I saw a Gastro...... doctor. He did an ultrasound and found stones, not to my surprise. I was never nauseous and nothing I ate make a difference. It was the pain.. going into my back, shoulders and chest. It really scared me. But, that is all over and done, thank God.
But, you should not give up! Keep going until you find your problem. Or what is causing you problem. There are so many things that it could be and guessing won't help, and we have to face it. There is nothing we can know for sure without those tests the doctors run. There is an excellent web site for diseases, conditions and the symptoms, but I understand we are not to post URL's. What this site has to say is far to much to post on here. But, I will try this. If you go to google, type in "medical sites" and go to the second one they give you, you will have found a great site. It should start with a H.
I wish you the best. There is nothing worse than constant pain and not knowing what it is from.
Like the rest of the gang has said....please let us all know what you find out.

Thanks for responding to post. Sorry to hear that you feel the same way I do. Can get pretty frustrating, eh...? Is your pain constant in your lower ribs? Does your abnomen hurt as well? Mine is so bad right now. It's on both sides of my lower ribs and it's burning, pulling and lots of pressue. Have you had tests done on your gallbladder, liver etc. What helps you with your pain? I noticed from your bio that you have 3 boys. I have 2 sons. They are quite demanding. Anyways, if you want to chat more, please feel free to post back here. Take Care,

I don't have the same pain that you do. However, I have been to the ER twice in the last few weeks for severe, stabbing abdominal pain (the last visit was 7 hrs!) I have been through many tests and everything comes up negative. I have more tests to go but can't do them until I get rid of a painful fungal infection in a very embarrassing area.

Just make sure that no one dismisses your pain as "one of those FM things" until everything else is ruled out. It is probably one of those FM things but it could be something else. For your health and peace of mind make sure your doctors follow all possible avenues.

    Good luck. Pepper

Hi, I wasn't going to say anything but I think it is in the water or the air!! For 5 weeks I have been laid up and laid down with persistant lower abdominal pain. It feels like menstrual cramps going all the way to the bladder. They did a urnine test and culture and it was negative. I've lost 5 pounds which isn't a great amount but sometime food makes me sick to smell or see it. Has anyone with Fibro ever had this? I also have some nausea off and on. I have to wait to go 100 miles to a specialist on the 12th so know what you mean about waiting.
It's always hard to know when something is related to Fibromyalgia. My son has FMS too and he suffers from pain under his left rib cage a lot. He says it always feels some better when he "burps"...
Is there anything new on this disease? Doctors may call it a syndrome but I call it a disease. I have read where there are some new findings on CFS. What can we do to get the scientist or whoever to do more research on this? Does anyone know?
I hope you find the cause of your problems too Tandy. Let us know.. you never know...it could be a help to some of the rest.
    Good luck!

Kalli-Sorry your feeling yuk too! I have that feeling too and sometimes wonder if its my bladder/kidney.I'm not peeing anymore frequently tho and it doesnt burn or anything~ Its just alot in my back, left side and ribs.
Tess- I have it in my upper belly(I suppose where you'd feel ulcer pain, but I've been checked recently for an ulcer&all was fine.)It hurts to lay on my left side.its not any better today.I have a headache too today!!feels like a migraine starting~ My childrens grandpa pickd them up for the day-so thats a good thing.I hope to rest.
you had asked me Tess if I had my gallbladder checked?I did last year but that was OK too.(besides...gallbladder is on the right side)my right side is fine.(knock on wood!)
I had kidney stones once years ago,it sorta reminds me of that but it never went into my ribs?My pain is constant-sometimes is a bit better but still there......I do notice it gets worse as the day goes on,if i'm on my feet to long. How about yours??So by evening I'm one sore SOB!
I feel grouchy too b/c i'm so sick of this illness!! I mean god give us a break!! I have so much to do with the holidays coming!!! I'm stressed!! and I'm sorry to vent on your post!! I know I should go to the ER,but its such a runaround~They'll take 3-4 hrs!!I guess I'm hoping that its a bug that'll pass~ Please let me know how your doing okay? Thanks,
    love,

How are you today? I'm abit better than last night, but that won't last to long. I cried all night from the pain. Yes, mine does get worse as the day goes on. I wake up with little pain and by the evening it destroys me. I also was curious if you get alot of gas with the rib pain. Do you have good bowel movements? The reason I'm asking is because I get alot of gas and awful bowel movements. And when I finally go to the washroom my pain gets even worse. I am so sick of always trying to figure out what's wrong with me, since doctors do a horrible job of helping. I hope this is just an fm symptom and nothing more serious. I'm going to do a barium enema soon and we'll see what that shows. I've done so many tests in this area and nothing has been found to explain all this pain. Could it be muscle? Who knows..eh! My left side hurts more as well. My right side very little. What type of pain do you experience. Does it hurt you in the belly button areas as well? Anyways, hope you enjoy your day off from the kids(lucky you), and I'll check in later.

    Tes,

The pain you described is identical to what is going on with me... my pains started in my mid-back between and below shoulder blades... then they came across the lower ribs and across the mid-abs. It feels achy burns and gnaws as you describe. Mine tends to be pretty even across the left and right, but I do notice it gets much worse when I am in a sitting position as the bend or fold seems to put pressure or something. Does yours get worse on sitting? Mine has also gone into my hips/buttocks. It is strange because it seems like everywhere I have a bone I have pain but my ab area where I get this does not have bones and therefore it is kind of different then my other pain - seems more like I did too intense of an ab workout (didn't :) ).. I am having the pain right now as I sit and talk to you... I also attribute it to FM as every test I have had done in the last 3 months has came up normal. Every new thing I get I don't know whether I have a problem or if I have FM anymore!! Take Care!!!!

Unreal how I always thought I was the only one with this pain. Yes, mine feels worse when I sit for a long time and when I lie down in my bed. That's when it hits me bad. It takes me forever to fall asleep. Do you get alot of gas and rumbling noises in your abnomen? What tests have you done? I have had this for about four and ahalf months now and dosen't seem to be getting worse. It goes away for a few weeks and then returns for a month or so. Have you asked your doctor what it could be. Not meaning to be personal, but are you overweight? I'm not at all, so I can't figure this out. Does yours hurt constantly. When I get up in the morning it's not to bad, but it progressively gets worse throughout the day, being at it's worst by evening. Anyways, if you need to talk more please post back on this thread. I'll check in later.

    P.S. Where are you from?

First off,Shell your pain sounds like mine,as mine is all in the ribs(left side low to mid back and its into my hip area too).???I have no clue other than that costochondritis?
Tess, I do have some rumbling noises in my belly...more than normal, but I do have IBS too.And my bowel movements have been diareah lately. Its pretty outta control right now...all I want to do is take pain meds and lay down.I feel so bad for my boys b/c they don't know what to think! This had been going on for too long.I was hoping it would be done!! I heard that some ben-gay type rub will help,so i'll grab some tomorrow. This seems to be a common complaint here,ya think? but still...I need to know what it is.This is pretty scary for me,as i'm sure for you too.
Please try to rest tonight....I'll be wishing this passes for us.I'll check in tomorrow.
    love,
    Tracey
I wanted to add.Do you feel more Anxiety with this new pain?? I certainly do.Its keeping me up nights and I feel like I'm gonna freak out!Stressed!!not good I know~but its very hard to get control with this dd.[This Message was Edited on 12/01/2002]

Yes I do get severe anxiety with this pain. I wake up in the middle of the night with the feeling like I've stopped breathing. It's takes me a few seconds to catch my breath and realize that I'm still alive. I hate this so much. I feel like I'm going to lose control when it gets at it's worst. My husband feels so bad for me becuase there is nothing he can do for me. I find it really hard to settle into a deep sleep. My mind is constantly on this pain. I have many other fm symptoms but this one is by far the worst. It consumes my every thought. I guess, in the back of my mind I wonder if it could be something serious with my stomach, liverm, gallbladder or colon...even though the tests that I've done have come back normal. I am doing a barium enema soon and I am seeing a gastroenoligist(sp?)(stomach doctor) in February. I think once that is over and everything comes back normal, maybe my mind will settle down. Tandy, have you had any tests done since it all started? I have had this pain since July and have done tests with no evidence of illness. If you haven't done any tests yet, request an ultrasound from your doctor and maybe some x-rays of you ribcage and adnomen. Maybe even an upper gi to make sure you don't have any stomach problems. I know how frustrating this is, especially around the holidays. This is supposed to be a time of happiness and peace, and we are so consumed with our pains. I just want to make this christmas a happy one, especially for my 2 little boys. Hope you get some relief soon(as well as me.lol), and we'll chat tommorrow. By the way, do you smoke? I do and I think it aggravates it even more. I'm a light smoker though. Maybe 6 a day. Take care and hopefully we'll have a pain free day tommorrow.

Yes I also have gastro problems/ stomach growling, but I had those long before I got this problem. Mine also is not too bad in the morning, and progresses as the day goes by. No not overweight either, I can tell you are racking your head like I do as to what is wrong. Mine hasn't gone away and came back yet though, I have gotten it most days for almost 2 months. I do feel like the ab ones are maybe contracting the muscles? Because when I use to do intense ab workouts and over do it once in a while I would get the same areas so I kind of know where the muscles are located at in the ab region. I have had an upper and lower GI and a pap, also a bone scan. I am as normal as can be :) Please keep me updated I am from the Kansas City area. Write me if you'd like smythmi@hotmail.com

Did some searches and found this info... seems like it may be the muscle that may be the culprit in this case??

This was on a fibro site:
When the quadratus lumborum muscle is involved there is often confusion as to whether or not the patient has a renal,
abdominal, or pulmonary ailment. The reason for this is the muscle's proximity to the flank and abdomen as well as its
attachment to the 12th rib, which when tender, can create pleuritic symptoms.

Had to look up that muscle on a different site:
Translation: "Quadratus lumborum" means "the rectangular
muscle of the loins." It attaches to your lowest rib, the sides of the vertebrae in your lower back, and the top of your pelvis. Its job is to raise your hip, but it also coordinates between the upper half and the lower half of your body.

Also a bit about myofascial pain:
    Myofascial Pain (Quadratus Lumborum Muscle)
symptoms: backache, hip or buttock, abdomen or groin pain. physical signs: tenderness below and close to the 12th rib, just along side of spine.

I definitely think that we should always have things checked out though as we would never know with all this pain if we had some other problem!!! TAKE CARE[This Message was Edited on 12/02/2002]
