I have horrid GERD. I took a round of the Prilosec OTC last month and it cleared it up.

Within 3 weeks of stopping it the GERD came back. I started taking the Prilosec again.

Does anyone take this long term? The package says don't take more than 4 rounds in a year unless directed by your doctor. I went to a GI dr. before and he had me on nexium for months straight.

I'm about to lose my ins. and don't think I can afford to see a specialist right now. Help!

for a couple of years straight now. I get a prescription from my doctor, but I'm pretty sure it's the same as OTC Prilosec. So, not only do I have her approval, but she writes it for me! I don't know about any associated risks & haven't had any problems as of yet. I wouldn't worry about taking it for a long period of time. From what I understand, uncontrolled GERD can cause permanent damage.

    Good luck!!

can cause damage to the esophagus resulting in "Barrett's Esophagus" which is a potentially pre=cancerous condition.

I have a very mild case of BE and take Prevacid daily by prescription. My case is so mild I only have to have an endoscopy every other year, rather than every year.

So Meow, get that GERD checked out and I wish you all the best.
