Seems to be that so many of us suffer from rib pain. I just read a post that you responded to regarding this. I just wanted to ask you a few questions...that's if you don't mind. I have been having this lower rib pain on both sides since last summer. I have done numerous tests...upper gi, barium enema, abnomen ultrasound, x-rays...I am seeing a stomach specialist now because all my tests were negative and I still have this severe pain. I am doing a HIDA scan next week and an endoscopy in October(big tests in Canada take forever to get). Anyhow, you seem to be very knowlegable and I just wanted to know if costochondritis can be extremely painful. I am so bad right now and I don't know what to do. The pain has been so intense for the past 2 weeks. It feels like a tight band is wrapped right around my mid abnomen. How long have you had this and have you ever gotten to a point were it was so bad you thought it had to be stomach or gallbladder related. I am so scared and tired of trying to fight this pain day in and day out. Any input would be greatly appreciated and I am so fortunate to have found friends that understand. Take care, Tes.

Also, I have been told that I don't have ulcers but everytime I eat the pain gets worse. It's not a deep stomach pain, but I feel the pain more on the surface. My husband thinks maybe when my tummy gets full, it puts pressure on my abnomen muscles. Do you ever have this feeling? Thanks again.

It seems a lot of us are suffering with the pain right now, it is strange that we all have the same problem at the same time.

All that I can tell you, is that I did have it checked, the gallbladder (which I was informed that it is on the RIGHT side not the left), my heart which was fine.

What they decided was that it was Costa Chondriasis, they described it as; inflammations where the muscles join to the bones of the ribs. All they recommended that I could have some kind of shots directly into the area, or take anti inflamatories for it.
I decided to go with an OTC Advil gel caps, with a low dose of Xanax and it does help the pain and inflamation. I don't like the medical profession too much, never got a whole lot of help with them.

You described the pain very well. It does seem like a band around your body that is being tightened. It is extreme pain, no doubt about it.

Yes, I do have problems with food too, I did have ulcers many years ago, and this pain is not ulcers. Pain from an ulcer is like having shredded razor blades in your stomach, it hurts that bad.

When I have this, and I eat I feel bloated, and it is most unconfortable feeling. Your husband might have hit on something with that! The food in the upper stomach could be pressing on the ribs and making it hurt more.

All I can tell you is what I took above, and to get a long heating pad and wrap it around your ribs where it is hurting. Thats all that I do. I wish I could help more. I know how terrible this pain is. Try to rest as much as you can, it seems to help.

Also, keep your upper body warm, I wear a tight (not unconfortable) fitting cotton tee shirt under my blouse and will also keep a fitted sweater on during the day too. Heat seems to be the only thing that really helps.

I have been getting this pain (sometimes it is on both sides, and even around my back ribs too), for at least 5 years now. It even hurts to touch it.

I don't know anymore to tell you, maybe Klutzo could help more, she is so knowledgeable on this, as she has it also.

It does get worst in bad weather, we don't have extream cold here in Louisiana, but it is damp and raining right now, and that seems to make it worst.

I hope I helped you some, and I sure hope you get some relief soon. Mine is hurting right now, it was so bad this morning, that I stayed in the bed till almost 5pm this evening.

Let me know how you are doing. Try eating soups and light food till it gets better, that way it won't hurt as much from eating.

    Shalom, Shirl

For the information you gave me. You are all true friends here. I do take really hot showers when it acts up. It does help, but the pain starts up again once I'm out. It's hard for me to rest because I have a 2 and 4 year old. I am very active in the home and I have to learn to rest more. My husband always yells at me for doing too much. My house is spotless and it makes him mad when I clean alot. Do you ever feel the pain in different spots. I can feel the severe pain under my breasts, then it moves to my mid stomach, then it also goes to my waistline and when it hits there I have alot of gas. I do take amitriptyline at night and this does help me to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep. I tried taking tylenol 2 but it just makes my pain worse. I will see what the HIDA scan shows next week. I am just so afraid that something is wrong with my stomach. Although, I don't get nausea, vomitting etc. My girlfriend is a survivor of stomach cancer and it wasn't even the pain that got her a diagnosis. It was severe vomitting, sometimes with blood, severe fatigue and the fact that she had ulcers increased her chances. I had an upper gi done and nothing was found. Hope this test was good in detecting any abnormalaties. Anyways, Shirl, I appreciate you getting back to me and look forward to chatting with you again. Tes.
