SHOOFLY PIE AND APPLE PAN DOWDY
    Written by S. Gallop/G. Wood

If you wanna do right by your appetite,
If you're fussy about your food --
Take a choo choo today, head New England way,
And we'll put you in the happiest mood!

With shoofly pie and apple pan dowdy.
Makes your eyes light up, and your tummy say howdy!
Shoofly pie, and apple pan dowdy --
I never get enough of that wonderful stuff!
Shoofly pie and apple pan dowdy
Makes the sun come out when the heavens are cloudy.
Shoofly pie and apple pan dowdy --
I never get enough of that wonderful stuff!

Mama, when you bake! Mama -- I don't want cake!
Mama -- for my sake --
Go to the oven and make some ever-lovin'

Shoofly pie and apple pan dowdy
Makes your eyes light up, and your tummy say howdy!
Shoofly, oh my, shoofly pie --
I never get enough of that wonderful stuff!
I never get enough of that wonderful stuff!
I never get enough of that rich and delectable,
    Sinfully schmeckable Shoofly pie!

    MAKE LEMONADE
    Written by Debbie Fleming

Oooh, Make a-lemon, make a-lemon, Ooooh
Oooh, Make a-lemon, make a-lemon, Ooooh

What do you do when your life turns sour?
Add a little sugar, and you make lemonade.
What do you do in your darkest hour?
Light up a candle, and you make lemonade.
What do you do when the times get tough?
Put on your boxing gloves and make lemonade.
What do you do with a string of bad luck?
Tie a kite on the end of it and make lemonade.

If a lemon makes you sour,
You may have to drink your cup alone.
But add the sweet sweet taste of your power
And somebody will always come along
    To help you be strong.

What do you do when the future looks black?
Eat a lot of carrots, and you make lemonade.
If there's a heavy load on your back,
Put it down for a moment and you make lemonade.
What do you do when nothin' goes easy?
Oil the machinery and make lemonade.
What do you do when life drives you crazy?
Dance in the moonlight, and you make lemonade.

Every cloud is lined with silver.
All the pain and heartache passes.
It's a long, hard climb up the hill for
The beautiful view from the top
    Through rose-coloured glasses

    What do you do?
Squeeze out the lemon and you make lemonade.
Tell me what do you do, what do you do?
Squeeze out the lemon and you make lemonade.
Squeeze out the lemon, hoo hoo,
    Squeeze out the lemon.
Squeeze out the lemon, hoo hoo,
    Squeeze out the lemon.
Squeeze out the lemon, hoo hoo
Squeeze out the lemon and you make lemonade.

This is a lovely little country song that thumps along like a happy heart. I first heard it sung by old Wilf Carter.

THERE'S A BLUEBIRD ON YOUR WINDOW SILL
Recorded by Audry Williams (Mrs. Hank Williams, Sr.)
Words and music by Elizabeth Clarke

    CHORUS
There's a Bluebird on your windowsill
There's a rainbow in your sky
There are happy thoughts your heart to fill
Near enough to make you cry.

With ev'ry tear you've washed away
All the things you've kept inside
You count your joys this lovely day
And you wonder why you cried.

    CHORUS

And if by chance your heart grows sad
    You still can smile again
With ever tear you've ever shed
    Comes the sunshine after rain.

    CHORUS

    best,
    Victoria

Hmmm just had a thought... maybe vinegar pie IS shoofly pie? Would make sense, wouldn't it? hehehehehe!

    lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the world

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day

Set to an old Celtic tune in the l930s. Cat Stevens recorded same, but did not write it. Played at John Wayne's funeral.

Hey! Shannon, good thread and I absolutely adore your pic in your bio. I copied it and hung it beside my computer.

Words and music written and performed by Harry "Haywire Mac" McClintock; copyrighted. Mr. McClintock's song dates back to the 1920's. It was written from the perspective of a "hobo" of that time period who did not hold a steady job, and instead traveled the roads looking for handouts and possibly getting into trouble with the law. Remember, although this is a fun song to learn and sing, having such easy access to cigarettes and alcohol would not actually be a "good" thing. Smoking and alcohol addictions are harmful to your health.

On a summer day in the month of May a burly bum came hiking
Down a shady lane through the sugar cane, he was looking for his liking.
As he roamed along he sang a song of the land of milk and honey
Where a bum can stay for many a day, and he won't need any money

Oh the buzzin' of the bees in the cigarette trees near the soda water fountain,
At the lemonade springs where the bluebird sings on the Big Rock Candy Mountains

There's a lake of gin we can both jump in, and the handouts grow on bushes
In the new-mown hay we can sleep all day, and the bars all have free lunches
Where the mail train stops and there ain't no cops, and the folks are tender-hearted
Where you never change your socks and you never throw rocks,
And your hair is never parted

Oh the buzzin' of the bees in the cigarette trees near the soda water fountain,
At the lemonade springs where the bluebird sings on the Big Rock Candy Mountains

Oh, a farmer and his son, they were on the run, to the hay field they were bounding
Said the bum to the son, "Why don't you come to the big rock candy mountains?"
So the very next day they hiked away, the mileposts they were counting
But they never arrived at the lemonade tide, on the Big Rock Candy Mountains

Oh the buzzin' of the bees in the cigarette trees near the soda water fountain,
At the lemonade springs where the bluebird sings on the Big Rock Candy Mountains

One evening as the sun went down and the jungle fires were burning,
Down the track came a hobo hiking, and he said "Boys, I'm not turning."
"I'm heading for a land that's far away beside the crystal fountains;"
"So come with me, we'll go and see the Big Rock Candy Mountains."

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains, there's a land that's fair and bright,
The handouts grow on bushes and you sleep out every night
Where the boxcars all are empty and the sun shines every day
On the birds and the bees and the cigarete trees,
The lemonade springs where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains, all the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth and the hens lay soft-boiled eggs
The farmer's trees are full of fruit and the barns are full of hay
Oh I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall, the wind don't blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains, you never change your socks
And little streams of alcohol come a-trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats and the railroad bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew and of whiskey too
And you can paddle all around 'em in a big canoe
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains the jails are made of tin,
And you can walk right out again as soon as you are in
There ain't no short-handled shovels, no axes, saws or picks,
I'm a-goin' to stay where you sleep all day
Where they hung the jerk that invented work
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

I'll see you all this comin' fall in the Big Rock Candy Mountains!

I was honored to have my best friend and her husband treat me and hubby and granddaughter to Disney (The magic kingdom) this past weekend. And the ride "Its a small world" will not get out of my brain.

    Hi Shannon,
Apple pan dowdy is one we all like around here but in the fall when the apples are ripe it's heavenly. Never ate a shoo fly pie though.Lemonade a favorite every where when summer arrives. Thanks for the memories in the songs. I seem to recall Burl Ives singing the Big Rock Candy Mountain in the mid 60s.Maineweezie

All day, Staring at the ceiling, Making friends with shadows on my wall, All night, Hearing voices telling me, That I should get some sleep, Because tomorrow might be good for something, Hold on, I'm feeling like I'm headed for a, Breakdown, I don't know why

I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know, right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
    A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know, right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be

Me, Talking to myself in public, Dodging glances on the train, I know, I know they've all been talking 'bout me, I can hear them whisper, And it makes me think there must be something wrong, With me, Out of all the hours thinking, Somehow, I've lost my mind

I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know, right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
    A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be

I been talking in my sleep, Pretty soon they'll come to get me
    Yeah, they're taking me away
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know, right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
    A different side of me
I'm not crazy I'm just a little impaired
I know, right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be
Hey, how I used to be
How I used to be, yeah
Well I'm just a little unwell
    How I used to be
    How I used to be

    (Especially like the chorus! Kat)

I think are brilliant. For example, here are just two samples from her song "Cracking"

    "It's a one-time thing,
    It just happens alot"

    "My heart is broken,
it's worn out at the knees."

Of course, now that I've written it out - it doesn't seem so brilliant. Perhaps I was just kinda drunk back in my early 20's, and everything was brilliant.

    Artist/Band: Gill Vince
Lyrics for Song: Look At Us
Lyrics for Album: Pocket Full Of Gold
    Look at us
    After all these years together
    Look at us
After all that we've been through
    Look at us
    Still leaning on each other

    If you want to see
    How true love should be
    then just look at us

    Look at you
    Still pretty as a picture
    look at me
    Still crazy over you
    Look at us
    Still believin' in forever

    Look at us
    After all these years together
    Look at us
After all that we've been through
    Look at us
    Still leaning on each other

In a hundred years from now
    I know without a doubt
They'll all look back and wonder how
We made it all work out

    Chances are
    We'll go down in history
    When they want to see
    How true love should be
    They'll just look at us

This song is ever young and fair to me. ;)
    xx

    Silver Threads Among The Gold

    Darling, I am growing old,
    Silver threads among the gold
    Shine upon my brow today,
    Life is fading fast away.
But, my darling, you will be, will be,
Always young and fair to me,
Yes, my darling, you will be,
Always young and fair to me.

Love is always young and fair.
What to us is silver hair,
Faded cheeks or steps grown slow,
To the heart that beats below?
Since I kissed you, mine alone, alone,
    You have never older grown;
Since I kissed you, mine alone,
    You have never older grown.

    Chorus:

    Darling, I am growing old,
    Silver threads among the gold,
    Shine upon my brow today,
    Life is fading fast away.

Candy Man (from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)

Bill: Who can take a sunrise
    Sprinkle it in dew
    Cover it in chocolate
    and a miracle or two?

    The candyman
    The candyman can
The candyman can cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good

    Who can take a rainbow
    Wrap it is a sigh
    Soak it in the sun
and make a strawberry lemon pie?

    Children: The candyman?

    Bill: The candyman
    The candyman can
The candyman can cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good

    Willy Wonka makes
    Everything he bakes
    Satisfying and delicious
    Talk about your childhood wishes
You can even eat the dishes

    Who can take tomorrow
    Dip it in a deam
    Seperate the sorrow
And collect up all the cream?

    The candyman

    Children:Willy Wonka can

Bill: The candyman can cause he mixes it with love
And makes the world taste good
And the world tastes good cause the candyman thinks it should
