    Hi Kids

Was listening to an old radio program. It was very popular in the 30s and 40s.
The writer used to amuse himself and his audience by making up crazy names for
small towns. I can only think of one at the moment, but it's a good example:
    Dismal Seepage, Ohio.

Anyhoo, I think a list of Towns You Probably Wouldn't Want To Move To might
    be fun.

    Gopher Hole, Texas
    Smudge Pot, Oregon
    Waste Basket, New Jersey

    Fly Paper, Utah
    Lost Hope, Mississippi
    Gangrene Gap, Colorado

By way of contrast here's a view of my home town from half a century ago. It had
a very positive name. And a popular one too. Used in roughly 30 states.

    Hi GB

That's a great list. I like Yeehaw best. Sounds like a place where folks know how to
have fun. I made up the names in my post above except for Dismal Seepage.

There are some places named New Hope, but couldn't find any named Lost Hope.
Probably are some mines that are lost. Here's a few more goofy ones.

    Gator Alley, Florida
    Barbed Wire, Montana
    Stove Poker, South Dakota

    Shoo Fly Pie, Pennsylvania
    Last Date, Delaware
    Lonesome Meadow, Mississippi

I've been reading a lot of Amish stories lately and there are some very unusual names in Lancaster County PA, like the above mentioned Shoo Fly Pie. My favorite is Bird In Hand. GB

No one wants to live at Red Tide Beach, FL.

    Hi Kids

GB, I looked up shoo fly pie some years back. Can't remember a thing about it.

Mikie, Oh, I don't know. Is everybody affected by the Red Tide or are some immune?
I'd try living there just to have you for a neighbor.

Soul, nice to hear from you. Drop in more often. I never heard of any of those places except
the one in Minnesota. Found a picture from Wankers Corner. Here's a pic of the general store.
    Biggest one I ever saw.

Very nice, GB. I especially like Big Butt Mountain. It's a real butte. One of my ancestors/
relatives has a butte named after him. It's in Monument Valley. The two Johns-Wayne and
    Ford- made several films there.

Toast and coffee make a good pair. That's what some folks have for breakfast.

Good ones Rock! I have a relative that lives in Goose Creek SC. I think that's cute. They used to live in Castle Rock CO. Both small towns I guess.

Here are some more TN towns:

    Stinking Creek
    Bucksnort

    Goat City
    Nameless

    Bitter End
    Dismal

And believe it or not there really is a Bugtussle TN. I thought it was a made up name on the tv shows Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction!

    Hi GB

Tennessee sure has some doozies for names of towns.

Do those relatives always live in towns with quaint names? You could switch those names around. Castle Creek and Goose Rock. I looked up Goose Creek. It's big: 35,000 people. Probably because there's a military installation there. The city's site says the source of the name is unknown. Maybe because the twists in the creek resembled the neck of a goose. (I think that's stretching it.)

"Nameless" seems to be an oxymoron. Never heard of Bugtussle before. "Dismal" is half of
    what we started with.

My cousins in SC are originally from Jacksonville FL. His job has had them living in several places. One in TN and another in AL as well as SC and CO. I know they loved CO. Their daughter participates in ice skating contests or whatever you call them. She's in college now and she's really good.

I remember Granny on Beverly Hillbillies talking about Bugtussle TN.

    Hi GB

Remember when Tennessee Ernie Ford was on the Lucy show? His home town was
Bentfork. Tennessee. The Ricardos and the Mertzes stopped there on their way to
    Hollywood.

How about "Heartache, Hideaway"? Or does that sound too much like a motel?

    Flat Broke, Kansas
    Depressed, Delaware
    Last Legs, Missouri

    Blight, N. Dakota
    Applerot, Arizona

    Hi GB

Fort Lonesome has a mournful sound, don't it? Do you remember the cartoon strip Lil
Abner? That was set in Dogpatch. Al Capp never indicated what state it was in, but it was clearly part of Appalachia.

    Dusty, Oklahoma
Locustville, Kansas (Guess what? After I wrote this one I looked on line. The are two real
Locustvilles. Georgia and Virginia. Who'd a thunk it?

    Cemetery, Alabama
    Second thoughts, California
    Born to Lose, Tennessee

    Mucking, Missouri
    Vulgar, Vermont
    Nausea, New Mexico

Want to start a new game? The opposite of this one. I remember taking a trip with my son
when he was about 12. We went to San Francisco and Hearst Castle. On the way back
we stopped in a tiny town named Harmony. It was for sale. I think it had about 4-5
buildings. A lady who worked there told me there were 16 towns named Harmony in
the USA. Just looked on line. One site says there are now 19 states with this musical name.

Rock, Is there really a Born To Lose, TN?
I think I must have been born there! lol

Just read that Dogpatch is a neighborhood in San Francisco CA.

What game would be the opposite of this one? Cities with happy names maybe? GB
