Vitamins, Minerals, Enzymes...Oh My!...update and ? for those who

    I am looking into another doc...a neruo I use to work for, not his specialtiy I know but I trust him and his opinions, and feel sure he will at least lead me in the right direction wheather it be stay with doc I have or find another.


    I have been researching my mind into la-la land...fog is real bad these days and I have a hard time keeping my eyes focoused to read os much...but...I'm trying

    I have so many ?'s I don't hardly know wher to start.

    1. I KNOW taht I have to get off the diet VERY addicted they are the only thing I drink besides milk with ceral. I have been trying to cut down and replace at least every other with water-which I hate, gives me heartburn but I don't see anything eles as an alternative, I don't like drinks with sugar or splenda, and I stay thirsty drinking not diabetic. I have been doing hatt for about 5 days now and I seem to be VERY sick sin e starting my decrease. I know that headaches with caffeine/aspertame w/d are common and boy do I have one...but I also feel "funny" inside, just don't feel right. Any ideas on how to make this any easier? a flush or something? anything?

    I totally rely on the caffine (and a provigil ro 2 at work) to make ti each day so i see that as a major prob 2.

    2. the doc said I was very deficient in all vit/minerals and wants me to start juice plus. Alot of what I have been looking at is what these def are what they do and such and hwo best to replace. I am a nurse and Never knew there were so many supplements out there. how can you judge which is best?
    I know it has to do with absorption...I swear I feel so freakin dumb that I can not figure this stuff out...

    I know I need you take one with the minerals added or can you get them seperat?...some say with out iron and copper? some with selenium?
    then there is the ? of vit D...doc wants me on marsahll protocol which requiers dramatic decreae in vit d but I have seen a lot that says we need more?

    Minerals...some say calcuim with magnesium (which is my worst def) some say take a different times. And then there are lots of differnt types of magnesuim and I need potassium do I fit all of this togeter?

    2. I've also seen lots about enzymes...i'm totally lost there.
    there are a million L-somethings, digestive enzymes plant or animal...

    Probiotics...I don't have yeast but Ido have IBS and have taken these when on an antiboitoc and sometims wehn I have a really bad flare of IBS but sounds liek I should be takine every day...and takeing the one that needs to be in fridg...sound right to you!

    well...I hope someone can make since of this and help me a hoping to go get something to start taking in the morning as i don't see either doc for a few weeks and I am so sick right now I told hubby I would go to ER if I thought they would do anything...hoping getting some of the things i am so def in will help

    ps...I am planning on trying the peroxide/salt bath this weekend...I want hubby home incase I were to have some strange reaaction and I want to be able to go to bed...might this help with the demon coke w/d?...funny I always thougt of my diet coke as my best is one of the few things that is ALWAYS by my side

    Try squeezing one lemon into a pitcher of water and drinking that instead of the coke. The lemon will help make the water taste better and I've also heard that when you stop something, lemon is good as well. Caffeine withdrawal is bad, but the lemon will help. I used it and it did help.

    My vitamin is a good multi vitamin with balanced amounts of vitamins and minerals (minerals help to unlock the vitamins for absorption, etc.). I don't use the ones with iron; the Vitamin B's that are added are a plus, also the folic acid. That all helps iron production. Iron will cause constipation and is just downright something I don't like to take. Trust the brand name products. Don't go for the mega vitamins. I use Schiff, but the Board has an area where you can buy their products and they have good products.

    My multivitamins have the vitamins A,C,E (all good antioxidants), K, B1, B6, B3, B12 (these help the nervous system and decrease "stress" or byproduct of stress), then the calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, magnesium, chromium, panothenic acid.

    I also take CoQ-10 50 mg, DHEA 25 mg, and grape seed extract 25 mg (this was found in one study to be better than the combination of A,C, & E as far as antioxidant.) The grape seed will help vision and cardiovascular strength.

    The vitamin D in my multivitamins is 400 IU, which is the recommended daily amount for an adult.

    As far as enzymes, those just help to break down proteins. If you like yogurt, that's the best for intestinal health. When you are antibiotics, it'll keep the flora in the intestines healthy. I keep yogurts in the fridge and take them in the AM for breakfast. Try putting yogurt in your whole grain cereal. It's really good that way!

    The hot soaks in the bath sound great. Take a tall glass of the water with the lemon in it to the tub to drink while you relax in the bath. Try a sprig of mint in the lemon water. It's great!

    Good luck with changing lifestyle, I know it's hard - but definitely worth it all!

    Don't get too discouraged. Everyone goes through this confusion at times. This is one of the best places to come at those times.

    You've had some great advice already. The lemon water and the baths should be helpful. I take a a multi-vit without iron but I'm post menopausal. Calcium and Magnesium, especially magnesium are good. You can certainly take more magnesium than calcium. A basic enzyme and probiotic are also good to start.

    All that being said, I wouldn't start too many new things at once. It's hard on your body and you won't know what is working. I hope you can get some advice form this new Doc. You do need guidance with all of this.

    In the meantime, keep asking questions and please let us know how it's going.

    Well I went to the health food store...
    between being a jungle gym for DevinLee and being overwhelmed and confused I left with nothing. I could not concentrat today (this caffine/aspertame withdrawl is really hitting me hard...very irritable and can't concentrate) and DevinLee was so hyper! It has been yuky and rainy all week so he hasn't been out much and is sooo full of energy (and himslef).

    Jaltair...when you say mix yogurt with the whole grain ceral do you mean mix in with ceral and milk or leave milk out?

    Willow-Wisp...I was once on Diet Dr. Pepper real bad too but it was much easier to come off than the diet coke fro some reason. What does the flax seed taste like? I must admit taht I am not or have not been into "health" food that much, I don't consider myself a picky eater but when I look at some of what people here eat I guess I am...maybe?

    pianowoman...thanks for encouragment...can you play me a song sometime when you feel like it? always wished I played something...oh and how hard was it for you as a nurse to get disability? Seeing as we are so specialized and have a "sensive" job in that we hold peoples lives in our hands seems like it SHOULD be a bit easier than with most?

    vickiw...great idea about the sletzer! and dosn't it have some vit or minerals or something in it that is good for muscle cramps? Geting some on my way home in the morning!!!

    hangininthere...wonder would the low acid oj be just as good? Never had heart burn until had baby...Love oj and use to drink bout a gallon a day now it and water (go figure) are the only things that give it to me...but I did not think about it having the mag/pot so that would be a good drink for me if i can get past the heartburn
    Can't wait to try the bath, plan on it in the morning after I get home from work. Hubby will be there and I can go straigt to bed ALL day if I want he said...yeah!!!

    Stormyskye...ok my question to everyone who does the whole green/organic food do you afford it? I mean in the summer I can understand eating/and do more veg. but now (and even some this summer) it is just so expensive. like one of my favs (I know it is not greeen but) squash. I can eat it by the poundS but it is/was almost 2$pound so to get enough for all of us is crazy. I find most veg taht I like to be like that. And I hate veg that have been shipped in refrigerated trucks like tomatoes...imo they are not meant to be in the fridge...loose taste and are just yuky. not to mention they run 3$lb other veg that I like don't really have much in them. Like celery I could eat it all day but it is mostly useless as far as I know, lettus as well (I hate all these new lettues everyone has now I just like plain old iceburg and it is really useless as far as nutrients)

    I called the lady the doc told me to see about the juice plus (who happens to be the docs wife...which is why I was sortof looking around thinking he might be a tad bias as she sells it) she was out of town til monday so...

    I've been relying on supplements for years. Digestive enzymes help with ibs...ginger and bromelain capsules, too with meals. Get a really good multiple with everything in it. I don't do soda...but coffee is my daily thing. Yogurt seems to do better for me than probiotics...those make me feel sick. Hope you get some relief soon.

    Well, pat yourself on the back for even beginning to sort this stuff It's alot of work just trying to understand what your bodies needs are!
    Oh, yes vegetables are costly. Higher in price if you are juiceing.
    Now days I'm knocking the sugar out of my diet, and its no fun. I crave it bad but feel better without it.
    I'm a big lemon person and big on water drinking.
    I think knocking out white rice, pototoes, white flour and sugar is a good startbut very hard to do.
    I use Kyo-Dophilus probiotic and Natural plant enymes-Lipozyme daily.
    I use Natural Progesterone Cream and jump on my Needak soft bounce tramp with a stabilizer bar on it (i jump 4 or 5 times a day with my feet never leaveing the soft mat of my tramp).
    I take a chewable multi-vitiman. I've got many supplements but I'm not useing them right now because knocking the sugar out of my diet is helping me feel so much better. I can only do so much at one time and getting rid of the sugar in my diet is a full time job!lol
    I", reading "What your Doctor may not tell you about Fibromyalgia/Fatigue"-by Dr. Paul St. Amand,MD and following the hypoglycemia diet or at least I'm trying too. :)
    I too have tons of brain fog.
    Sugar is my enemy big time!!!

    It is confusing ... try not to "fix" it all over night. Going slowly and making sure each supplement you had has the right effect on you is a very good idea.

    Most people with CFS/FM have problems with a very select group of nutrients.

    For starters, why don't you consider: 1. whole food b-complex , 2. whole food multi-vitamin/mineral formula. ,
    3. ZMA magnesium and zinc product , 4. Malic acid.

    You can google these things (specially the whole food products) or the ProHealth store here can help you with

    After a while you might want to add these: 1.acetyl-L-carnitine , 2. ALA , 3.whey protein concentrate , 4. amino acid therapy. ( which is a whole different post! LOL )

    Good luck on this. They do make a difference. Many CFS/FM specialists point out that these supplements are not going to "cure" you or make you feel brand new overnight, but they will fix the deficiencies and help you to feel overall a bit better.

    Kinda gives the body the tools it needs to help fight through these illnesses.

    But I used to drink a huge amount of soda too. I can't stress enough how bad this is for our system, even a healthy one, and let's face it,...we are not healthy so it's even worse.

    It also leeches nutrients out of you.

    Read the articles on how poisonous aspartame is and that will keep you away!

    What I did was get Kool-Aid packets and mix it up with Splenda. IT's more water than anything and gives you that flavor.

    It sounds like your detoxing from it,(which is good, obviously it's toxic to your system if your detoxing from stopping it) and the only thing I can suggest for helping that process is lemon in your water, saunas, walking, exercise and steam baths and massage.

    What great advice you have here from people who really know their stuff! Even so, you must be feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all. Take your time and see what works for you.

    In the meantime, I'll play you some nice relaxing music to keep you calm and centered. Maybe the Pachelbel Canon today!

    I'm in Canada so my disability will be a bit different. I have a good plan at my work. I taught nursing at a Community College. Despite that, it took a while, in fact the waiting was the worst part. I did have to run around and get the documentation from the Doctors.I wondered how I would have done it if I hadn't been mobile! I did get it, however, and it has been a godsend.

    I wish you all the best with everything and keep us posted when you can.
