They have been there for a year and a half. I scrape them off and they come right back. My throat is red but not that painful. Tonsils are swollen some.

I have had 4 throat cultures over the past 1 1/2 years and no strep, plus I am on amoxicillin now and they aren't going away.

MY EBV titers are somewhat high, but doc says that means past infection

I dont seem to have a problem w/yeast...

What is this? I have seen about 7 docs for this and no one seems concerned.

Any ideas? Does chronic EBV cause this? Thanks for any help.

It sounds like you might have tonsilitis. They can be 'pus bags' holding infection. Do you have a sore throat, earaches, anything?

If that is what it is, please see your doctor so they can put you on something to help.

I am a mom of 2 older kids. This was a way of life for us! LOL

I have been on abx several times over the past 1 1/2 years. Doesnt seem to help. I do have a mild sore throat..maybe viral?

Sorry, I fogged through some of your original post!

It still sound's like infection, but you have been treated. How weird. It could be viral. Have you seen an Ear,Nose,Throat specialist? If not, maybe give it a thought?

    Honey, I am stumped! LOL

The white spots could possibly be anything. For the last 8 months, I've had white spots on the back of my throat, and a bit of a red throat. I've also had an on and off mildly sore throat. I had throat swabs and they showed nothing. Then recently I went to the doctor for my depression, and I also mentioned my sore throats and my slight problem with swallowing. So he got me an appointment at the hospital to do a "G.I. series exam", where they get you to swallow this horrible stuff, then take x-rays of your stomach and throat. As it turns out, I've been diagnosed with GERD (GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease). It's where your "valve" of your esosphagus doesn't close properly, and stomach acid gets into your esophagus. So the doctor thinks that my throat problems have to do with the acid irratating it, which would make sense!

Anyhow, I'd keep going to different doctors until you find one that will check you out, and take you seriously. I've mentioned my throat problems to other doctors, and they all said the same thing as yours.

Some of us have crypts or holes in our tonsils and food gets stuck in there. I don't know why,but it is always white. Sometimes they fall off by themselves and sometimes I go to my Ear Nose and Throat doctor and he removes them. But I also get them when I'm sick, so I don't know what the connection is. A good ENT doc should be able to help you out. Do they have a bad odor? Then I would guess that is what you have.

I was an Advanced Nurse Practitioner until FM and a back injury disabled me. I would think that those white spots, if they are scraped and come off, and you aren't running a fever or having an extreme sort throat, could indeed be yeast.

I have been bothered with yeast, but have been so overwhelmed by everything in general, that I didn't pay attention and when I went to The Fibromyalgia Center my tongue and tonsils were white coated. I have been on a coarse of Nystatin from a compounding pharmacy, so it doesn't have dyes or additives, for around ten days and the tonsils, tongue and other places are all clearing.

That would go along with the fact that you have had cultures done which didn't show strep to something else.

I don't rmember for sure, but the medium within the culture tube may be condusive for bacterial groth, but not yeast.

all the time, when I do, it usually comes with all, some, or non of these things: bad sore throat, swollen red tonsils, larngitis (SP??), or strep.

They are there for a week or so and go away.

If it really hurts I go to the doctor (every time he says I have strep), if not, I drink lots of hot tea with honey and lemon, and take over the counter meds for sore throats, and lots of Halls cough drops w/ honey in the middle of them.

    Hope this helps some.

    Good luck,

thrush. Thats usually something you find in infants and with people who have comprimised immune systems. Would that be you? Its basically a fungus and you treat it like a candida infection. Lots of friendly bacteria. Your doctor should know about oral thrush though? Or are you educating him/her too! Sorry Read

Hi suz, I posted this back in March, I get them all the time too. Here's my old post.

Anybody got Cryptic Tonsils? 03/17/05 07:50 PM

I can't believe I haven't seen this posted. Does anyone else have cryptic tonsils? Big gross tonsils with holes that fill up with white hard pits? They smell rotton and make my throat sore. I have found if I apply pressure next to the pit with a Q-tip, I can remove it and throat feel better tomorrow. Anyone?

    Thanks guys..

I think what I have is different than the cryptic tonsils because they are also on the flat surface of the tonsils. I have had the food stuck in the pits before, but this seems to almost cover the entire tonsil.

How do you know if it is candida or not? I have had stool and organtic acid tests that show no yeast in my body.

Would candida cause a sore throat too? My throat is pretty red...this is a year a half of constant sore throat and white pockets...strange.

It all started when I did Network Spinal Analysis..its a form of energy work. From day one I had a sore throat then came the white pockets and this awful exhaustion that is 1000 times worse than my normal CFS fatigue. I guess it stirred something up in my body..

I have seen ENT, 2 ID's, several internist....and no one seems to know or care for that matter.

    Thanks everyone.

If you had a yeast infection, I would think you would be in a lot of pain. I have had a lot of them and pain is usually the symptom that tells me to check it out. You can have a sore throat too that is not white. You can have redish parts of your mouth and it doesn't necessarily have to be white, but usually my tongue will be coated white.

I have had my endo's nurse to just give me the Rx for Mycelex with 4 refills because I get this so much. Last time finished my dose and got it again because I forgot to throw out my toothbrush. :( Taking the Mycelex troches ends up giving me diarrhea and the leaks which is a pain, so I'm happy just not to have that in the first place.

My endo's nurse has MS and so she is very sympathetic to thrush (she gets it too) and other FM problems, even though I'm not being treated for FM by the endo.

I had my tonsils out when I was 4 years old.

Yeast does cause a lot of pain in your mouth, on the side of your tongue in just one spot, etc. It is a really weird problem. The pain is a lot like if you burn your tongue. Just drives you crazy...

Yes I've had it a couple of times also the second time was because it was not cleared up in the first instance. Mine occured because of dry mouth (I'm having tests for Sjogrens syndrome) but now I am fastidious about my oral hygiene and haven't had thrush since!!

Try a google search on "tonsil stones" and see if that's what it sounds like.

I have had trouble with white spots on my tonsils for years. It doesn't hurt but I can feel it with the back of my tongue. That is interesting.

I have this exact thing! If they get big enough I can work them out wiht my tongue, but they cause swallowing to be a big problem.

I find the only food that gets stuck is white also, (or yellowy white--always smells bad) and my theory is that only when eating carby food (pasta seems to be the worst) or certain grains (couscous) the situation is worst.

I wondered if getting the durned things removed would help? Some of you have Ear nose throat specialists? How much help have they been to you and what can they tell you about these pits?

My son has had this happening in the past 3 mos, he is 8 years old and believe it or not they are called tonsil stones in laymans terms, Tonsillolith is the medical name for them.

What my son's ENT told me was I need to get him a water pic and he needs to spray his tonsils with is nightly brushing of teeth. She also said she has them too and they do cause bad breath.

My sons are usually white or beigeish in color.

Here is a link for a better description of them, good luck.

Mine are not hard like calcium deposits... does this mean it's a different thing?

they are about the hardness of , hmmmm let me think for a minute. They are firm, not hard like calcium deposit, but you can also squish them with finger and boy they will be smelly.

Hope this helps......and not weak of stomach.
