I have applied for SSDI but was denied and have asked for re-consideration. I have never heard of a bench approval. Can someone tell me what that is?

    Thank you,

It's when your AT the court hearing and the judge decides during the hearing and informs you during the hearing that you've won your case. My approval was a bench approval, the judge halted the preceedings while I was answering his questions, said he'd heard enough and that he was going to approve my SSDI.

    Sincerely

It is also called Oral (bench) decision, on the SSA website. There is a procedure that must be followed by the ALJ to make that decision and they must justify their decision to the SSA. It is possible for a bench decision to be overturned by the Review Board who oversees the judges and their decisions. Hope this helps.
