What is the difference between cfs...cfids...fms???

At one time my old doctor thought that i had fms...now years later and a different doctor says i have cfids...

When the old Doc. thought i had Fibro, I had about 10 of the 11 tender points. I don't think I have those now, but I do have just about everything all of you talk about as syptoms of both (or all three??)..

Also, I know that cfs (and cfids??) have periods of time when you seem to be almost "normal", what about fms?? Does it also have periods of being almost healthy?

I can't even tell you when this all began for me...30 yrs ago i suffered from extreme fatigue...and for almost that long i've been tested repeatedly for all those things that might cause fatigue, and then diagnosed as being depressed, even when I insisted that if i was depressed anyone who felt as worn out as i did at such a young age WOULD be depressed.

It's been so long that I asked my Mother if I had been BORN TIRED!!

Yes, I have times when I think I am ok, then it hits me like a ton of bricks. Those times have ruined alot in life for me. Guilt has ridden me like a wild jackass for years because when I was needed...I was always "too tired", or paid dearly for the extra effort.

I do believe that stress is a major factor (or even tension, or "nerves") for me.

Today is a great day...but who knows, tomorrow may be the day I return to hell for a visit. Surely there will come a time when I can say that I feel "great" and it will stay that way.

    love, Sumbuni (is happy today!)

fibromyalgia is not an auto-immune disease, chronic fatigue or chronic fatigue immune dysfunction system is thought to be or found to be in people with immune dysfunctions. they do have a lot of the same symptoms and often go hand in hand with eachother. a lot of people with chronic fatigue get fibromyalgia because sleep problems are thought to be one of the causes of fibromyalgia. maybe this helps?

There are people who go into remission with CFS. But they can also relapse. Hopefully the last is only because they forget they have to keep on taking care of themselves?

I'm pretty much a "plateau" person. Most of my days are pretty much the same, unless I push myself too much. Even on my normal days I can't get much done and am only employable if I can find someone who will let me work 1-6 hours/week over two days.

I have a friend with both CFS and FMS. She doesn't suffer much from the CFS unless she overdoes it. That may be how you are....

as i say, i've been tired all my life that i can remember (which might be only last week! LOL) The forgetfulness and brain fog started about 10 yrs ago, maybe more...oh, pooh! I can't remember exactly, so i can't really say how long i've been a)trying to get well on my own or b)trying to find a doctor who didn't think I was a hypocondriac, or whatever...anything but really sick.

Thanks for the info...it seems that if you have either life can be pretty tough!

I know how you feel when it comes to the drs. I have been through probably 5 or 6 and after losing my job of 11 years and then walking out of my third job since I seem to have a problem with the highs and lows and how they get to me........

You say that cfs comes first, then fms. Can it be the other way around? Fms first & later cfs? Just curious.

    Take care.

I don't want to be argumentative, but with me the FMS came first. I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and never had fatigue problems. The fatigue has been coming on gradually over the past 2 years. Lately it is terrible and I'm seeing a sleep specialist on Friday. But for me FMS definitely came first.

BUT I'LL THROW IN MY 2 CENTS TO ORIGINAL ?...... CFS & CFIDS ARE THE SAME .... DIFFERENT NAME.... SAME FOR FM OR FMS... CFS WAS ORIGINALLY GIVEN THE "NICKNAME" "YUPPIE FLU" UNFORTUNATE , SINCE IT COULD'NT BE MORE INACCURATE..... THE NAME CFIDS SORT OF MORPHED..... SINCE THE DISEASE ENTAILS MUCH MORE THAN BEING EXTREMELY TIRED ALL THE TIME FOR MOST.... AS TO WHICH COMES 1ST...... SORT OF LIKE WHICH WAS 1ST..... THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG...... SO MANY VARIABLES... SOME HAVE ONE OR THE OTHER & SOME HAVE BOTH... & SOME HAD 1 OR THE OTHER 1ST. BUT CFS/CFIDS... FM/FMS..... ME.... & ..IN SOME CASES MS.... SEEM TO BE RELATED.... BUT ... AT THIS POINT IN TIME... NO ONE KNOWS WHAT CAUSES ANY OF THESE DD'S.THEREFORE , TREATMENT IS SOMEWHAT A SHOT IN THE DARK.. THE TOUGHEST PART SEEMS TO BE TO FIND A DR. WHO DOES'NT HAVE HIS HEAD UP WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE.... BLESSINGS,BILLCAMO.

I seem to be exhibiting some symptoms of cfs lately (past month or so). Mainly the overwhelming fatigue in legs & stomach problems. I realize fatigue & stomach trouble comes with fms, but never experienced it as severe as I have recently.

Even if I'm not having problems with IBS my stomach doesn't feel "right" EVER!! I don't enjoy eating like I used to. Everyone used to comment on how I could eat sooooo much & never gain an ounce. Now I could care less about eating. Must be getting enough tho, not losing weight. lol

The two DD's have so many things in common, it's hard to tell what you have. That's why when I go see my doc today I'm going to ask him about cfs. & get his take on it.

Thanks, Jelly & everyone else for the info.

    Take care.....Kathi

I still don't know for sure, which came first the chicken or the egg...but i think the chicken did...God didn't say anything about creating eggs...but I'm sure He did!! (((smile)))!!!

As for the fms or cfs...the only difference that I'm sure of is that fms has the tender points and cfs has something else...and I'm NOT sure what it is that cfs has that fms doesn't. The best I can make out is they are terribly similar...to the point that some think it is the same thing, just more symptoms...

ME from what I got on the net is another (better??) name for fms.

All I really know for sure about myself is that "TIRED" IS MY MIDDLE NAME!!! As for sleep?? I can sleep plenty, it is just a terribly restless sleep. I awaken feeling like I'd worked all day and all night, too! Years ago making my bed was a breeze, turn the corner back up and the bed was made. Now days the bed looks like a rather large war took place in there! I make the bed from scratch, just like changing the bed clothes!! I rarely remember dreams except when I'm on meds...some of them at least, not all that i've taken help the sleep, and none leave the bed nice and neat by morning.

Again, thanks for all the info!!

    God Bless!
