Why are benzodiazipines (Xanax, Klonipin) helpful?

Does anyone know why this class of sedatives is helpful for us? I've found a low dose of Xanax (.25 mg) 3 times a day has relieved my nausea and the flu-like feeling that I have most days. However, my dr. wants me to go off of it because she doesn't believe in long-term use of benzodiazipines. Have any of you had similar experiences?

Yes, they are helpful. They relax the central nervous system and we need that but they are physically addictive.

I keep some Xanax around for "emergencies" but don't take it regularly for that reason.

We suffer from a slight state of seizure which can cause insomnia, anxiety/panic attacks, racing brain, sensory overload, muscle spasms, RLS, and tinnitus. Klonopin, an antiseizure med, stops this seizure activity.

Xanax, an anti-anxiety med, will help with the anxiety and some of the other symptoms.

Cheney has an excellent article on Klonopin in the Library here. It is posted on the board often.

    Love, Mikie
