She had just gotten off the phone, talking to her neighbor down the street. Mabel was such a sweet old lady, and Annabelle dearly loved her but sometimes she could be so exasperating. It was hot in the kitchen and someone had let a fly in, so perhaps she was just feeling

peckish. She wasn't normally this ill tempered but what she saw this morning on her walk was beyond the pale. It was just to much....

Someone was building a new house on the old vacant lot in the neighborhood. It looked to be huge and very modern. She hadn't been out walking in that area for some time and didn't realize what was happening with the vacant lot even though she heard through the grapevine that someone had bought it and was building a home there. Peaceville was an old town with modest homes built back in the 1930's. Just then the phone rang and it was...

Drop off some scones she had baked. She was such a dear girl, much like Mabel herself but much easier for Annabelle to talk to. Perhaps it was because they were close in age. Mavis might have more information on who was building this new house that really didn't look right among the modest homes around it. The sound of the doorbell interrupted her thoughts...

it was the postman dropping off her order of seed packets from Green Garden Seed Company. She was pleased. As usual, her heart gave a little jump of pleasure on seeing the beautiful pictures of flowers on the cover of the packets. Last year her neighbours driveway had looked so pretty with a riot of gay orange coloured impatiens lining it...

When spring arrived, people in Peaceville started coming out of their houses more and planting colorful flowers. As it warmed up, they would sit on their porches to greet their neighbors on their walks in the neighborhood. Every porch had rocking chairs or porch swings. It was an ideal place but the idea of that monstrous new house ate at Annabell's mind. Who...

who, WHO, would do such a thing. Annabelle was so upset she decided to think of more pleasant thoughts, such as the new baby that she was expecting next....

December. The doorbell rang again before she had time to sit down. Glancing thru the lace curtains in the front window she could see Mavis’s van parked in front. Who could miss reading the letters scrawled across the sides, COBBLESTONE ANTIQUES AND COLLECTIBLES. “Barry, I’ve got company but I promise to call you back.” She hung up the phone and then Annabelle opened the door to find Mavis standing on her porch, holding a bright pink bakery box topped with a ribbon and bow. Come in, come in, your Grandma Mabel told me you were coming over with scones! To what do I owe this unexpected treat?

Mavis seemed to be a bit uncomfortable as she waited for Annabelle to brew some tea. She noticed she was using the beautiful plate she had bought from her antique store for the scones. Mavis had managed to dodge the question about why she had stopped in but she knew she had to spill the beans before she burst. She just didn't want to sound like a gossip because that's one of her Grandma Mabel's least attractive traits. When she could wait no longer, she said, "I heard something about the people building the new house and I just have to tell someone. I knew I could tell you and you wouldn't judge me. I really have a hard time believing it but...

has a secret child. They say he about 6 years old. No one knows who the father is but it is thought that he is from here in Peaceville." When she left town to follow her dream in Hollywood she had just broken up with her high school boyfriend. It was sad really they were so cute together but ....

his mother never took to her. Too flighty is how she described her to her friends and relatives who asked. Ben needed someone stolid, sensible and a good housekeeper who could take care of the house and help him with his business. The Mackles ran the local grocery store which did brisk business and a daughter in law who spent most of her time primping in the mirror and perusing movie journals was not their ideal choice. Oh no!

Chapter 2

Lottie Rose thought as she sipped her coffee, I left this town in disgrace but I am coming back for something bigger than myself. I hope the people here will be more forgiving and understanding now than they were. It didn't matter if they werent she was here now and she felt she just had to make it work. Little Evan as small boys often do, had just knocked over his milk onto the floral chintz tablecloth at the boutique hotel diner. It was time to go and put her plan into action.

She had made mistakes in the past. She had merrily gone about her own way. The hurt of Ben breaking up with her and crushing her dreams of walking down the aisle and settling down in blissful matrimony with the towns most eligible catch at the time, because of his familys’ disapproval had broken something in her and she had retaliated by throwing caution to the winds, flirting with any guy who showed the slightest bit of interest in her.

She had flouted the towns old fashioned rules, scandalized the ladies with her lack of regard for their conservative ideas of how young women behaved and when a middle aged lady from out of town had offered her the chance to leave it, and a job working the roulette tables at the casinos in LA she had jumped at the chance.

But now, twenty years later, she was back. And she had a little boy with her. Little Evan meant the world to her and she would do anything to secure his happiness

Lottie Rose rushed down the sidewalk with Evan in tow hoping no one would recognize her. After her stint in LA at the roulette tables she had gone to Vegas for a better paying job but as sometimes happens ended up as a dancer instead. The pay was great but her self esteem suffered greatly. When she found out she was going to have a baby she turned her life around went to school and became successful in business. She had worked hard but would this small town that had shunned her forgive her, she hoped so. For little Evans sake she hoped so.

All it would take to set up her foundation at the new house would be one signature and she was running late. Just as she was ready to step off the curb.....

....she ran into Barry who she had gone to school with. He enthusiastically told her about the trees that he had gathered from all around the world in his Arboretum. They brought Evan there to play and explore. Evan ran around touching all the tree bark, from the smoothest like polished silk, to a wrinkled, tough texture like elephant skin. Lottie Rose felt encouraged to meet up with an old friend who welcomed her and her child. But as they were leaving, she came face to face with....

Annabelle and Mavis who had popped in at the spur of the moment to speak with Barry. Lottie was relieved that they didn't seem to know who she was as she whisked past them. Now she was really late for her appointment. She quickly put Evan into his booster car seat and got in her Land Rover and headed back to the lawyers office to finalize the paper work on her charity. She was hoping the grand opening would be .....

a grand success. That the townsfolk would appreciate her Support a Teen program that was meant to guide young people in school and just out of school to make better decisions about their lives. She had had this idea germinating in her brain from several years now born of a desire to help kids from making the same mistakes she had as a teen, from falling into the same pitfalls that had scarred her young adult life.

She meant to make the event as enjoyable and to the townspeoples liking as she could without going overboard on the expenses. A florist had agreed to provide flowers free of charge, she had arranged for a caterer
