Hi Everyone,

Just curious on why when I take Doxycycline my loose stools, frequency, and cramping go away?

I was put on Doxy a few years ago for a mycoplasma infection for a year and a half. What really amazed me was that all my IBS symptoms diappeared and stayed that way for about 6 months after I discontinued.

A little history, I've been ill with CFS for 5 1/2 years and IBS has been a constant unless I take an AB.

I'm on week 3 of Doxy just out of curiousity as I herxed so bad on AB when I had bronchitis last month. Told the doc about this and he was agreeable to give the doxy another shot.

Anyone else had a simliar experience like this? or your thoughts would be appreciated?

Best wishes to all,

Foxglove

Antibiotics actually are a pretty mainstream treatment for this:

I don't see doxy on this list though.

What's really interesting is that they think that only one strain of probiotic is likely to be useful.

Thank you for responding lisa. I will try and get to this site this weekend.

I always take a good probiotic when on AB.

Thank you again,

Thank you lisa for the information on this site. I finally had a chance to read it.

The first time my IBS resolved was when I took Flagyl for a stubborn case of bacterial vaginosis (yet another problem that has arisen along with the IBS since becoming ill with CFS).

I then went on the Marshall Protocol (no luck) but the IBS cleared up again with the Doxy/Minocin.

I always take a probiotic when on AB.

Again, a huge thank you for the information.

The Doxy cleared up my IBS which leads me to question whether IBS can be caused by bacteria as are some ulcers.

Thanks for the input Mikie, I wasn't aware that Doxy also helped your IBS.....I think you said you were working on a mycoplasma at the time you were on AB.

Dr. Tietlebaum suggested in his books that PWC have bacterial bowel infections and listed them. When I initially took the information to my PCP he tested me for the usual strains of bowel infections which all came back negative.

Fortunately the bacterial vaginosis led to Flagyl and then I found a CFS specialist that put me on Doxy. I never got the proper testing but I do feel a tad,,,,maybe more than a tad better, not having the constant runs every morning.

Best wishes to all,

That ABX have gotten a bad rap because docs fail to tell patients that they have to take probiotics when on the ABX. Stomach problems can get worse when on them if one does not take the probiotics. Fortunately for me, I had been on probiotics for years before I started the ABX as I had seen a presentation of Leaky Gut Syndrome.

I agree about the probiotics.

Perhaps you could mention your experiences on the chlamydia pneumoniae thread?

I've never used antibiotics in this way (actually haven't used them much since I've been sick) and so can talk only theoretically.

Best, Lisa

In 2002 when I was in remission, I was in Mexico and picked up this scourge. I was even taking doxy as a preventative measure. Didn't help. What did was oil of oregano drops chased down with water. That cleared up my problems. It took 2 weeks to completely subside, but even my friends on cipro had taken awhile.

Just a thought.

Guys, I developed IBS after my 16th year, and after so many tests, dr's did not know what to do with me and told me " I have IBS and that I should live with it....." I got doxycycline prescribed after sugary 3 weeks ago, that I took for 2 weeks 2x500mg, and guess what, I was able to eat anything again (all spicy food that before, I was not able to eat, not even 1%.. Nothing at al, no spices, no acids, no E numbers, no macdonalds, no ketchup, nothing...

Now I can eat everything I want, without a single problem, my bowls don't feel iritated anymore, no more sharp, inflammed feeling..

I'm super happy, but this makes me wonder.. It seem afteral, an chronic infectopn, or ulcer or something? that is now cleard up after 10 years, due to antibiotic?

All the best guys.

Hi Boldy. Are you sure you were using 2x500mg of doxy a day? It looks like a very high dose. How do you feel now?
Thanks

Dear Rexnol1,

First, welcome to our wonderful site. It has been a God send for me. Boldy posted in 2013 so I'm not sure he or she will see your post. I can't remember my dose when I was on Doxy. After so many years, my IBS symptoms have returned but I'm not taking the Doxy now because, like with so many old drugs, the cost has jumped to $125 a month. When I increase fiber in my diet with supplements, it helps. A friend here told me about IBgard to help sooth my stomach when it's bad. It isn't cheap. It's just peppermint oil in a capsule. I can mix some peppermint oil into a spoonful of marshmallow Fluffy to get the same results. Good luck to you. Let me know if I can help with anything.

Hi Mikie,

How much peppermint oil did you put in the fluff?

I am having a really bad ibs flare up right now. Doc wants me to try an elimination diet but everything I eat is giving me stomach pain. I need to get things calmed down first.

Doc prescribed Bentyl to help but it won't be here for about a week, mail order is a little slow. I have peppermint essential oil already, is that what I would use?

Hi, Willow,

I'm sorry; I said peppermint oil and should have said peppermint extract. It's available at the store in the baking aisle. What I have done is just pour some of the extract into the Fluff and mix around on the top. I taste it and stop adding when it's pretty strong. I haven't measured it but it doesn't take much. Then, I spoon it out when I need to settle my stomach. Usually one spoonful is enough, I continue to add the extract as I go down the container.

IBS is miserable. I hope the Bentyl helps you. In the meantime, I hope the peppermint Fluff helps if you decide to try it. If not, it's delicious in hot chocolate. BTW, fiber supps traditionally don't help me and often have made the IBS worse. I take the gummy fiber cubes I get at Costco. They are called Fiber Well and are made by Vitafusion. The suggested dose is two of the cubes but I take three.

Just thought of something else. I have found the Garden of Life Raw Probiotics I got here really help with IBS. They are a bit expensive but I took them daily for the first two weeks and then every other day to keep the good flora populating in my guts. These are the best probiotics I have found and I've tried a lot of them.

MIKIE - I am glad that you got some IBS relief from the GOL Raw Probiotics. I had just the opposite when I tried it as I was hoping that this would help my constipation problem. Was on it for 2 months but not sure they helped. At least for now I plan on staying on the reg probiotics due to price and the RAW didn't seem to help my constipation and I was also trying to take more fiber and drink more. I too have had bouts of probable IBS but not lately, mostly just constipation, which I have had mst of my life.. However all the meds I have been trying out has not been that helpful in that regard too. That is usually one of the side effects, of so many drugs.

That is interesting about the peppermint extract and the marshmallow fluff. I'll hCW TO THINK bout that when I have another flare.

WILLOW - Glad to meet you and know if you stay long enough oyu will love it here on PH. You might want to try Chit Chat one day on the PORCH, too. So sorry the IBS flares have been so bad for you. Years ago I had it a lot but now not so much. Constipation has almost always been a way of life for me. However, when you have loose bowels you never know when it was going to hit. ESPECIALLY BAD WHEN YOU ARE NOT HOME OR NEAR A BATHROOM. I'm sure you know all about that.

Love to you all,
Granni

Granni,

My guts are cramping even as I type. Been acting up for a couple of days. Sorry the probiotics didn't help you. They help me but there is only so much they can do. I forgot to pick up the marshmallow Fluff at the store so will go take an IBGard capsule. My IBS has both constipation and diarrhea as symptoms. Doc only said to get more fiber in my diet. That helps but it's not a cure.
